When I built my house 18 years ago, Dad said, "Son, whatever size your garage is, make it three feet wider and three feet deeper". We put in a man door with the width. But how did he know I would eventually need the length?

Wise old men, been there done that things. We need to listen more and talk less to those dads, old men and let them teach us something.

I’ve built two plus a pole barn. They are never big enough.
 
I think statements that can be followed up easily with basic logic and reasoning should be accepted. But that’s why you should question what you’re told. But this theory of never building big enough in terms of a barn or garage well you just can’t argue with the logic of “can you fit and use the largest vehicle you might put in it “?

You can never have a garage or shop that is too big.

So true. It’s just nice getting everything under a roof and protected from wind and precipitation. My dream is to build much bigger than necessary. We will see!
 
I’m so happy that I decided to 9 foot garage doors on my house and detached garage. I didn’t need it then but it’s nice now.
