Cummins HO Squeaky Belt or Pulley

The saga continues.... Had my truck back for about 3 days... Monday morning rolled around and the noise was back even after all the worked they’d done again. This time they said we’re just going to replace everything. So they did to include AC compressor, alternator, power steering pump, idler pulley, serpentine belt, etc. I got it back yesterday after the ninth repair. I have requested buy back but have not received anything as of this afternoon. They said it would take 5-10 business days. Here’s hoping they do the right thing!

All components on the front of the engine (AC pump, Alternator, Belt, Idler Pulley, etc) have been replaced. I am a little afraid to drive it due to every other time the issue coming back. Since all of this started I have been without my truck for 26 days. I am hopeful that it is fixed this time. Many of the components listed above and others have been replaced before.

If everything has been replaced it should be fixed lol.. Was fan clutch replaced?

That I am not sure about. They said they replaced everything on the front of the engine. I will have to look at the repair paperwork.

Let us know I wonder if it was if not and noise comes back it must be that.

In other words, they still don't know what the problem is and their remedy is to throw parts at it and, fingers crossed, the problem will magically disappear. That not encouraging... :(

Just noticed this morning my truck was making a weird noise on startup, i caught it with the camera real quick before it stopped. Sounds like what some of the other guys are hearing, bought my truck in late February, got about 1600 miles on it.

Hey @g00fy - is this something you are planning to address with your dealer? If so, please do not hesitate to follow up with us via PM for an additional layer of support through that process.

Yes this is it. Is this a 2019? Which engine (HO or standard)??

My truck has the standard cummins, but it does have dual alternators, don't know if that plays a role or not.

I have the same issue. I posted a video on post #50. Noise is only there when starting up when below 35ish degrees. I have the HO with single alternator. Dealer never fixed my issue but I hope you have better luck!

I had same issue, after much fussing about them not “just changing the belt” when I had 15k on it because I knew that was just a Band-Aid. They had me leave the truck because they couldn’t do the belt until two days later and meanwhile he had another engine that had gone bad internally he was able to use the pulleys off of it to check each and everyone of mine. Eventually finding that it was the main pulley, not the idler or ac compressor like he thought because it was louder on passenger side than driver. They replaced main harmonic balancer pulley, and belt and I have put another 15 k in the last 2 months and it hasnt come back. Thats why I wanted it fixed right the first time as it will be out of warranty in another month. I drive over 10 k a month pulling heavy. Now I am on here trying to find out why it is consuming over a gallon of oil and still has 14 percent left on oil change. It did it in between first change as well... hopefully this isnt a lemon.

I think the potential for oil consumption is a reality with the "low friction piston/ring" setup on the new Cummins. Along with the CP4, hollow camshaft, scissor gear cam drive, and roller hydraulic lifters it was on my list of serious concerns when I ordered this truck. They keep whittling away at what made a Cummins a Cummins.

Glad you got the first problem solved and letting us know it is still quiet. Sorry about the oil drinking problem. Hauling heavy lots probably finds the engineering limits quicker than most of us will. If I have a motor low on oil I often take it as a signal it wants to be changed and usually do if feasible. Not so easy to do if your out on the road though. Not very scientifical but thats what I try to do.

Does anyone here have the 2020 yet? If so, any issues with the belt or out of the norm noises? Considering a trade in of mine since they cannot seem to truly fix my issue.

I test drove mine a few days ago and put about 150 miles on it. I heard about of having noises so, was was listening to that along with everything else I was hearing about here. On this test drive I couldn't find anything wrong. I guess I will have to give it some time to see these Gremlins appear. I will be taking delivery of the truck later today. It anything appears I will be making posts about it as well.

Other than the mystery noise with the truck turned off that I posted in a new thread, I don't have any noticeable belt or CP4.2 pump noises.

I have the standard Cummins and my start up makes that noise in the morning, typically without it being that cold (In Las Vegas) but stops after 30 seconds or so. I am not yet sure if its a problem I will pursue until the dealership can actually take my truck for the 68rfe recall. Been waiting for parts.
