Crap Firestone Transforce tires

I've dealt with the guy my whole life in business. Our shop is one of his biggest customers. He takes pretty good care of me (even though I'm retired) and he's keeping the Firestones.
At $300 per tire (rough numbers - I have seen as low as $288) + Tax (assume 10% = $30) + Mounting / Balancing (Typically $20 per tire but maybe freebee if big customer); Assume 10% discount for fleet buyer (may get more, but thats $30 per tire) - so roughly $1200 if free mtg/bal
So if you are getting new Michelins for $500, he is crediting $700 for Firestones - you are getting a great deal.

Trying to decide between Michelin Defender LTX M&S (R speed rated), Michelin LTX/AT (S rated), Michelin Agilis Cross Climate (R rated), vs Cooper Discoverer AT3/LTX (S Rated) or maybe Bridgestone Dueler Revo AT3 (S Rated) or Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus (S Rated) to replace Firestone Transforce HT (S speed rated).

Mostly highway / secondary road but some offroad (got stuck in mud with previous Transforce AT). In light snow 3 times in last 6 years - but did not really have problem with Michelins. Some highway towing - mostly under 10k gooseneck, but some up to 20k dual tandem gooseneck.

Switched to Michelin Defender M&S and never could get them balanced right (about 6 tries to balance by 3 different dealers and 2 alignment checks) - was about to try and warranty them when truck was totalled by tree in Hurricane Ida.

Local dealer can only get the Michelin Agilis Cross Climate - says other Michelins not currently available in that size. But the Agilis seems to be poorly rated - anyone with experience with them?

Pirelli and Bridgestone seem to be higher rated in All Terrain but not sure about Pirelli on truck (its the only LT size they make in that tire). I had good results with original Bridgestone Dueler AT on Jeep 20 years ago, but not towing anything.

Leaning toward the Cooper Discoverer AT3/LTX or Michelin Agilis. (Kind of off the Michelin Defender M&S anyway due to balance problem + availability and the LTX/AT gets poor ratings compared to the others)

Recommendations / Experience Please.

Took the stones off at 59 miles for some winter Nokian Hakkapelittas, in the spring some Continental AT's are going on.
 
No experience from my side but the rating looks all excellent on Tirerack for the Michelin Cross climate. See link below.
They have the snow peak symbol which is pretty awesome for an all-season tire.
I can only recommend Michelin from my past experience on other vehicles. They are usually the benchmark on durability, noise and traction.
I have talked to experienced (retired) semi-truck drivers and they only trust Michelin tires, especially on the front axis. (of course that is all subjective)

I see Contis on a lot of Semis too.

Only gets a 3.5 rating on Michelin site - with complaints about wear and trailering - seems to be designed more for Vans than Trucks?

I had them for the last two years I owned my 2001 F-350. I liked them. Seemed good traction wise and pulling the TT. Did not put enough miles on them to judge wear life.
 
I have used General Grabber A/Tx tires for a few years on my EcoDiesel. On my second set now. They’ve been excellent in snow, mud, wet and dry gravel roads, and all conditions for sealed roads.

Will probably put them on my 2500 once it arrives. IMG_2245.jpg

I'm not going to out the guy but I will post when the job has been completed the final tally. I suspect we purchase 100 tires per month from the guy. I myself have probably purchased 2 dozen in the past three years plus what I have sent my kids and family in to purchase. We've had the discussion off hours re how he can sell at the prices he does. He depends on the booking discounts and end of rear rebates from the manufacturer. I suspect his dead cost is less than two bills per tire. I've never asked him and I've never priced elsewhere. If he's allowing me a hundred each for the Firetones he's still making money on the sale.

Dont know about today, but back in the day, we were happy with 30% profit on tires - mostly it was high 20's just under 30%. If he is doing high volume, he is probably getting an extra 5% or maybe 10% off Dealer Pricing and 2% net 30 on billing, so you are probably getting at cost if he is figuring $100 per tire trade. And at $100 per tire he is doing OK - He can probably get $600 or dump them at $400.

Interesting... Was planning on selling those same tires AND the stock wheels for $400 LOL
Although my tires have 12k miles on them so maybe my price is decent.

I happened to have an auction last fall to downsize, I put my Transforce 285/60R20 tires only with 1100 miles on them on the sale no reserve, ended up getting $520 for them. The guy that bought them was happy and I didn’t have to pay to get rid of them, definitely more than I was expecting to get.

The 20's will bring more than the 18's - at least back then most of the new 20's were about $300 ea and the new 18's were around $200 ea. Have not priced new 20's recently, but the better new 18's are just under $300 ea. Either way $500-600 for a set near new (no punctures, under 2000 miles) is a steal if you just need tires on a budget and they are probably better than the low end junk $200 ea tires from China.

Interesting they would put the 18 inch Transforce HT (Highway Tread) on the 4WD instead of the Transforce AT (All Terrain Tread). Not that the AT is that great, but the Limiteds and other 20 inch get the AT (even the 2WD variants), why not all the 4WD get AT and the 2WD get HT.
 
Are the tires that come on the 2022 2500s with the off-road package as crappy as the stock tires?

Depends - the Firestone Transforce AT are designated as All Terrain while the Transforce HT are designated Highway Tread. I had the AT on my 2015 and the HT on my new 2022. Personally I dont care for either one. Going to change out on new truck tomorrow - probably to Cooper Discoverer AT3/XLT

The HT are quieter and smoother than the AT on the highway, but I would not expect much from the HT off the pavement in dirt/sand/mud/snow. The AT in theory should be "better" in those conditions, but "better" is relative. The only time I got in moderately bad mud with the Transforce AT, they filled up with mud and spun me in - had to get a Jeep to tow me out.

Cant say about snow or other conditions as I switched to Michelins and never had any problems - though they were a highway tread and I was not as adventurous after getting stuck with the Tansforce AT which were relatively new at the time (about 10k miles).
 
Replaced the Transforce AT’s on my new 2500 srw 6.7 at the dealer and never even drove on them. For what we pay for these trucks Ram should offer a better tire. Either way I’m not going to drive on a tire I don’t want just to save some $$$. In the end I’m super happy with the Nitto Ridge Grapplers and the truck rides and drives like a dream.

I'll gladly save $$$ for you I have had good luck with my Transforce HT tires and when the time comes I'll replace with the Transforce HT2. Of course all my miles have been highway, no mud, sand, snow just highway. I seem to think Ram does know what their doing. But everyone has an opinion. Good luck on your Nitto's.

Well I can say one thing in favor of the Transforce HT's or more correctly in favor of Highway Tread compared to All Trerain. On the same road (which was older semi-rough asphalt - no obvious potholes or irregularities), the Transforce HT are smoother than the Cooper Discoverer AT3/XLT. Not bad, but noticeable. But on newer smooth Asphalt further down the same road, no detectable difference. I suspect its simply a matter of more dense tread pattern (narrower grooves and less space between blocks) on Highway Tread tires.

So maybe the odd choice to put Highway Tread on 4WD trucks has to do with selling trucks smooth ride as well as cheaper tires. But selection of Firestone HT over Michelin highway tread or even Firestone HT2 is probably solely on price.
