Cp4 injector pump Failure

Springfield40

I had a 2014 Eco Diesel truck I loved but wanted a little more pulling power in the mountains, so I bought a 2019 2500 6.7, and the Eco Diesel had 110,000 trouble free miles. The Eco's had some CP4 failures, bottom end failures , EGR problems that could cause a fire etc. Owners definitely experienced some of those problems, but many more didn't. One fellow who towed commercially delivering travel trailers and boats all around the country, was one of the early 2014 Eco Diesels owners, drove stock 370,000 trouble free miles till a head gasket went out. Put in a new motor and last I saw was closing in on 600,000 on that truck. As you may have read Ford uses the pump and has had failures, GM did as well and had failures, GM switched to a Denso pump and I saw on a forum site there have been some issues with that pump as well. So when all the stuff was going on with the Eco Diesel, especially the chance of catching fire, guess what... Ford and GM also had vehicle fire issues as well as other failure issues. Vehicles today are too complicated with all the computer electronics, sensors, etc. etc., competition between manufactures trying to out do each other, and too much government control in how they have to be built. American low sulfur diesel fuel quality seems to be the problem, thanks to the Federal EPA and California CARB dictating fuel blend guidelines. I'm afraid it's the time we live in now and no matter what brand you buy it will always be something, just drive your new truck and enjoy it, and if you have a problem deal with it then. Damn...., just read Toyota is recalling 5.4 million vehicles over fuel pump issues!!

Was this problem covered under warranty? I've heard stories about not being covered because of contaminated fuel even if its from the metal shavings from the failed pump. Sounds ridiculous but wouldn't hold it past a dealership to try and weasel out of it. We just bought a 2020 a couple months ago and now just finding this out.
You will be fine. It’s only the folks that join the forum on the same day post about their CP4 horror story lol

Most never to be heard from again...
got my buy back letter from FCA on 10/27. just received my truck back yesterday from the dealership 11/3. new cp4.2 and injectors. fuel system flushed. new transmission. FCA says i should have my money and turn in the truck by the end of the month. im also getting an employee pricing number that they hope will help when buying the next truck.

How long did that take?

truck was in the shop since august 17th. i filed a lemon law claim within 2 weeks because the dealership said it had 10+ codes and other issues. i had a case manager in a day. once the tranny needed replacement in early october, FCA approved the buyback and i had a new case manager . took about 2 weeks to have an offer from that point

Interesting. Nothing for any 3500 on the CP4.2.

Wonder if stuff like this is related:

Dunno what a fast feeback prog is but maybe some internal thing to study and fix something ASAP. May have been where the Symetrical Cam pump came from.

reading the PDF doc, it seems they would only publish this if they are seeing recurring problems and questions from the field, no?

if so, are we getting closer to FCA admitting they have a real problem?

The primary purpose of the tech doc is for dealer techs to identify the correct version of the pump and load the correct flash for it.

Other than a redesign of the cam lobe to symmetrical, I wouldn't read any more into it as it's all conjecture at this point.

Sorry, I should have been clearer in my post as there are multiple PDFs above.

The pdf I was referring to is this one https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC-10181566-9999.pdf which is dated from September and is titled “Symptom/Vehicle Issue: Metal Or Other Debris Contamination In The High Pressure Fuel System. Parts Ordering, And Repair Process Information.”

I may still be reading too much into it...

More legal beagle stuff this time with Ford this month:

Take it for what it's worth as the "news" is a puff piece for the law firm.

Interesting to read the pdf though and the arguments in it:

FCA......tick...tock just like your bootsie asym pump, looks like your time in the hot seat is coming.

The Court finds that Plaintiffs have adequately pled that Ford equipped its vehicles with a fuel injection pump that has a propensity to adulterate the fuel system and render the vehicle inoperable. Plaintiffs have pled that Ford was aware of the problem of the incompatibility of the CP4 fuel pump with American diesel fuel. Thus they have satisfied the first two elements. They have also pled that Ford deceptively concealed the problem by such acts as: (1) intentionally avoiding the use of prevalent American diesel fuel that did not comply with the pump’s specifications when running its performance tests; (2) representing that its vehicles were robust and durable despite this critical defect; (3) instructing dealers to blame vehicle problems and failures on fuel contaminated by some unrelated outside source; and (4) failing to properly respond to NHTSA inquiries seeking information. Plaintiffs, including Broussard, have alleged that they relied on Ford’s assurances Case 2:18-cv-00456 Document 97 Filed on 11/02/20 in TXSD Page 18 of 29 19 / 29 regarding the quality of the vehicles and its fuel system when purchasing their vehicles. Plaintiffs have met the third and fourth elements of their fraudulent concealment claim. Dismissal based on statute of limitations is not, therefore, warranted.

Ouch. Sound familiar?

Has anyone found a video or write up of one of the newer Symetrical Cam Design pumps being pulled apart to see the changes compared to the older Asymetrical Cam Design?

i have the newer pump (single big dot) but can’t find any details on what they actually changed (I mean real details, not just the speculation from the other thread that introduced the changes).
