Changes to DEF Limp Mode

Emergency vehicles have alway be exempt from, deleted from factory. I’ve looked into buying used firetrucks(550/5500) but would have to install the system to license them. All federal vehicles are exempt as well

I just went through a DEF derate about a month ago. I live in far northeast, remote and very rural California. While traveling home from a trip the "Service DEF System, See Dealer" warning came up and gave me 91 miles before derate. My closest dealership, which is my dealer, was 110 miles away, while home was 96 miles away. I chose home, and when it it hit that 91 miles derate threshold another warning came up that told me the truck would go into actual 5mph limp mode at either the next engine shutdown, refueling, or extended idle time (what that time is I do not know).

The truck operated normally and I got it home without a derate. I had it towed to a local mechanic who got me back on the road. I haven't taken it to a dealership yet (my dealership's very good mechanics both jumped ship and went to work for the local municipality), but I'm hoping it was simply a glitchy sensor. Something like this proposal would give us some breathing room to get our trucks safely to the right place without the hassle and expense of towing.

Gawd, the EPA is an awful agency staffed with truly awful people. I hope Admin Zeldin can make it a more sensible PUBLIC SERVICE agency.
You need a code reader . I had that happen to me years ago . Plugged it in and cleared the code and it never happened again . Lucky .

Fire engines and ambulances absolutely are not exempt from emission requirements since 07.5. Dpf, def, scr, they all have it. The only thing emergency vehicles have going for them are they will not 5 mph derate and you can pause a active regeneration with a dash mounted switch if in a situation where you wouldn’t want very high exhaust temperature coming out of the tailpipe. Just don’t leave the inhibit switch on for too long or it will need a forced regen to clear it out.

Just looked at 2 firetrucks with factory stamped block off plate

Last post bc this is dumb, but here’s a older article from a respected fire service trade magazine on the implementation of emissions on apparatus, and the 2nd is a new article from another well respected magazine on where they are going for 2027

Just going by what I saw on the vehicles, I am ok with being wrong as well. These were 2 F550’s with no after treatment at all.
