I took a test drive of both the 6.4 and 6.7 last week at the dealers. I tried the 6.4 first and really liked the seating, power and the quietness in the vehicle. Tried a used 6.7 ( only diesel they had) and if just felt cluncky, seats weren’t comfortable and it was loud! From there on I decided I was going to get the 6.4 even though the mpg’s were only about 14.

Fast forward a few days. A guy at work just got done testing the 6.7 so I thought I’d bring it home for the wife to try it out. This was a completely different truck then the one I tried at the dealership. It was quiet, ran smoothly, had great mpgs (21). Im hooked on getting the diesel now. I just need to find the extra money now!

Maybe the first truck you drove had the HO engine? That transmission (I hear) is laggy. That is the reason I ordered my Tradesman with the standard output 6.7. I don't need to tow anywhere near the max capacity. I'd rather have a bit more performance.

Looks like the used model was much older (if the seats were not comfortable, so not same gen?).
Motor noise in the last gen is much more controlled. It even have an active noise cancellation (all trim models? not sure).

@Fry I’m not sure you can go wrong with either choice. I decided to go with the 6.4(previously have always owned diesels). Although there are times I do miss the diesels I would say the additional $$ up front wasn’t worth it to ME and MY NEEDS. Good look with your choice and I have no doubt either way you go you will be happy!

I had heard this as well prior to buying my truck. I can tell you personally that in my new '19 3500 w/H.O. 6.7L, I am experiencing NONE of the issues some are apparently having to deal with. Quiet, torque is superb, and zero problems with the transmission.

It was a 2019 2500 Big Horn. Only had 1200 miles on it. Not sure what was up with it, but it wasn't anything like the one I'm test driving now.

My '19 3500 with the H.O. can be laggy/lethargic in changing gears. Example is yesterday I was getting on the freeway (not towing), and was about 50 mph and needed to get more speed to fit in. Pressed the go pedal, and the truck immediately slowed while downshifting before starting to pick up speed.

Pressed the go pedal, and the truck immediately slowed down a little before starting to pick up speed. Seemed the engine reduced the fuel initially while downshifting.

Makes sense. There is an odd part between asking for fuel and gear changes that de-fueling will happen I was towing about 12k yesterday and the defueling was a lot more evident. However the shifts under load was excellent. I would rather have a slight defueling than tearing a trans.

The HO has been a great truck so far. Hope it continues.

It's an acquired technique and somewhat counter intuitive but, when getting on the go-pedal, ya need to rollll into it. After a bit you'll discover the sweet spots according to speed and then you just need to hang on. ;)

I'm hoping to get my hands on a 6.4 for an over nighter soon so I can compare the two. I'd like the wife to see the difference as well as seeing what my MPG's will be on my daily drive to work.

If you're not towing, don't buy a diesel. PERIOD.

The limited savings in fuel mileage vs. the increased cost of buying the diesel, will never pay for itself in the usual lifetime of a pickup.

But hey, if you have money to throw away, rock on with your bad self :)

About the transmission, search the forum for TSB 21-001-20. Get the dealership to install the update.

I disagree about throwing money away, that argument is ridiculous

But I do agree with making the choice and balance of what you need with what YOU WANT

Don’t worry about what is said on here as much, rather focus on how you feel using your vehicle as you want. We live in America. how others want to spend your money is none of their concern.

I went with a 68rfe in my 3500. I just found it to be a smoother shifter than the AISIN. I honestly didn't think the H.O. was any faster. I was really impressed with the 6.4 with the new 8-speed. I almost went that route and wish I would have.
