My update:

Finally got to the DMV today. My local DMV received my paperwork last week on thursday from Bud Clary and Bud Clary actually over paid my taxes and registration by about $380. So DMV is refunding Bud Clary and Bud Clary will refund me. I had to push Bud Clary a little bit to get my packet sent to the DMV, but nothing too crazy. They were busy and ended up Fedex'ing my packet about 2 days after they said they originally would. No big deal.

I got to the DMV and immediately drove through the VIN verification line and got the truck inspected--took about 30 minutes total. I then walked into the DMV, waited about 10 minutes for my number to be called, and they handed me my plates and stickers. The entire process at DMV took about an hour (yes i got lucky, timing and day was right --Tuesday around 3pm).

Prior to the DMV, last week i got the truck smogged and weighed at a verified truck scale. The scale ticket was not required as the DMV already had the weight of the truck entered into their system--Im guessing from the certificate of origin.

Easy easy and 4 thumbs up to Bud Clary for the entire process from start to finish.
This gives me hope in the process. Seems the Certificate of Origin is important here so I'm hoping (and will push) that gets sent to DMV where it sounds like they didn't do that for Newtocummins2021. I'm waiting for the loan to be funded any day now so that I can arrange transport. Ron from Bud Clary was the one handling my paperwork.

I spoke with Sandi @ Mark Dodge again today to see what this process looks like going through them. They handle all of it except the smog. Said I have a 20 Day window to get it home, get it smogged and let them know and they will handle the rest. Hoping when the time comes it goes as smoothly as it was explained.

It's really not that big of a deal.

You will have to get a smog and also a VIN inspection. I did not have to get a weight cert, but some have reported that was needed (i got one anyway and wasted $10 in doing so).

When i bought my truck, most on this forum were getting 12-14% off of MSRP (I got 14.2% off) so it was more than worth the time to do all of this if you live in CA.

Ok, just registered the truck on Monday. Turned out to be a really simple process.
I received confirmation from Amelia at Bud Clary that they had fedexed the "necessary" documents to DMV. What they send is:
1) CA Application for Title or Registration (you likely signed this at dealership; don't waste time refilling out at DMV)
2) Certificate of Origin for a Vehicle (Effectively the title transfer; most important)
3) Odometer Disclosure/Title Extension Statement (you probably signed this at dealership).
4) Vehicle Buyer's order (You got a copy of this at dealership)

Make sure that you have Bud Clary send it to whatever DMV you will physically visit.

Then you will need to get a smog check. You don't need to get a weight certificate for a 2500 - not sure of the 3500 and above, but didn't need the certificate I got since truck is listed < 10,000 pounds.

Once you get to DMV first drive into the VIN inspection lane. A DMV employee will then do their thing and check under the hood to make sure emissions, etc. are ok. They will give you a form, then go wait in line at DMV and tell them you need to register an out of state purchase. They will look at you as though speaking a different language, will ask to see the title, you will tell them the paperwork was sent by dealer to the DMV, they will respond with "we don't do that, but talk to the person at the window". Once your number is called tell the clerk the dealership sent all the info. Person will ask if anybody from DMV contacted you to come in. I said no, they shook their head, then got up and walked around for a while in the back and returned with a folder of the documents. I found later in the mailbox a packet DMV had mailed of the paperwork sent by Bud Clary inviting to come in and register the truck. You don't need this, but would probably speed things up. Once she returned with documents I had to sign a few things and then we were done and I got my plates.

The only slight discrepancy is Bud Clary under charged me $72 so I had to write a check for that amount. Bring your checkbook.

The only other thing is mounting the rear license plate frame. I went to local dealer to see if they had a special mounting bracket - they don't; you drill through the bumper where the upper indentations are - I mounted plate frame and then drilled lower two holes so now it's solidly affixed. For some reason front bumper already has the plate holes.

Good luck!

Did Amelia contact you, or did you have to contact her? If you did could you share the direct number. Am trying to find out if my paperwork has been sent yet.

Amelia contacted me, but just forwarded over the information she got from the finance guy (forgot his name). I would go through whoever your sales person was. In my case, they waited about 10 days before sending paperwork - they claimed that was a requirement with the lender.

Glad you got it done! Much more difficult than what I went through with Peters. I never set foot in the DMV. Although I did have to have a weight cert for my 2500. The DMV inspector asked for it.

So what did you have to do? Just submit a VIN verification form and leave?

He verified the VIN on the dash matched the paperwork signed the VIN form and I left. He also verified the weight cert matched. I mailed those forms and the smog cert to my dealer (Peters). My plates were mailed to me.

Got my registration and plates today. Bud Clary sent the paperwork to my local DMV upon my instructions which delivered on Friday. Super easy process, only needed to get the smog check performed in advance and had them do the VIN verification at the DMV. No appointment and I was on my way in less than 30 minutes. It also looks like I'll be getting some money back as I was overcharged on the sales tax and/or licensing fees.

Very similar to my experience except i wasted money on a weight cert which wasnt needed.

I wonder if that is because you have a 3500 and were already going to pay CA's higher fee. I needed one for my 2500. It made no sense to me.

I didn't get one, nor did they ask for a weight cert for my 2500.

The unladen weight was listed on the cert of origin .. and it was a few hundred lbs lighter than my weight cert. doh! Oh well.

Honestly, it's going to vary by DMV Id imagine.

Hey Guys, just noticed this. My CA registration says commercial. I think that's normal? What does yours say?
