Speaking of boats, I’m in the same one as I hope to take delivery of my 2500 from Bud Clary in the upcoming months. This thread will definitely come in handy!
Well, not fun. Went to DMV about 3 weeks after getting back to CA. First, went to a local truck stop and got the truck weighed. Then went to local smog place and got truck sniffed. Took my paperwork from the dealer with weight certificate and smog cert to the DMV.Im dealing with this next week. Not looking forward to it.
@Newtocummins2021 how did it end up for you?
Who are you dealing with at Bud?I'm getting my paperwork overnighted from Bud Clary for receipt tomorrow upon which receiving back they said they would have to hold the truck for up to a week in order to confirm the funds from the loan have settled. Until that is done I can't retrieve the truck or have a transporter pick it up.
I asked questions regarding the registration process and brought up the need to have it weighed, smogged and VIN verified and the guy I spoke with said that was the first time he had heard of that. He said they would handle all of the paperwork with the CA DMV and said the registration and plates would come from Bud Clary. I'm not too sure that's the process but I'll be sure to have Bud Clary send the paperwork directly to my local DMV with the Certificate of Origin included.
I, too, am not looking forward to it so this thread is super helpful to identify what not to do or expect.
Unfortunately his name escapes me. I should hopefully know once the paperwork arrives tomorrow. Aydin was the salesperson who took over from Phillip.Who are you dealing with at Bud?
Ahh. Aydin was Phil’s underling that completed my deal when I got there as phil was off for the day. Not impressed with him either. Maybe I expect too much.Unfortunately his name escapes me. For the price (~13% off MSRP) I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt along with some leeway. Just with your experience with the process I don't expect the registration phase to be completed in a timely and painless manner.Ahh. Wow, that is a PIA. I guess it is a lot harder when the dealer drops the ball. My purchase was so easy. I never stepped foot in the DMV. I just drove up to the inspection line and had it inspected. I sent the weight cert, inspection, and smog cert to the dealer and they did the rest. I feel your pain dealing with the DMV.Well, not fun. Went to DMV about 3 weeks after getting back to CA. Waited in line and finally got to the front. They gave me a number and sent me around back to get vin verification. They also gave me a form to fill out. once vin verification was complete, I returned to the front and waited for my number to be called.
My number was finally called and I walked to the lady and handed her everything. Dealer had already collected taxes and was spot on with the amount. She then noticed the dealer had collected registration fees. I explained it was only for CA and no registration was done in WA. After much frustration and confusion it was determined dealer never sent the money they collected for the registration fees to the CA DMV. I told them not to worry about that and I would just pay them and get the money back from the dealer.
I paid my $1100 registration fees (they only collected $680). They then explained the dealer was supposed to sent either; a copy of registration (doesn’t exist as it was never registered), title (also doesn’t exist as it has never been registered), or certificate of origin (this is what should have been sent). Ultimately I had to get a temporary registration until the dealer sends these items.
It’s been three weeks and I still get no answers from the dealership. Keep getting told it will be mailed and I would be given tracking info. Still nothing. Bud Clary is crap and doesn’t know how to do their job.
Dealer said they have to send paperwork to a central DMV in Sacramento. Local DMV said that’s not a thing and it has to be sent to the exact DMV office you are going to use. Just use AAA if you can and make sure your dealer actually mails it.
Happy to answer any other questions.

Since the dealer had not sent anything I just paid the $1100 in full hoping to complete the registration. Not knowing there was other paperwork they didn’t send and I couldn’t complete it anyway. I am now working on getting my $680 I paid to the dealer back and trying to get them to send the paperwork so I can complete the registrationWhat a mess. So you paid $1100 out of your pocket to your DMV for your registration or you paid $420? $1100-680 (they collected)=$420.

My update:
Finally got to the DMV today. My local DMV received my paperwork last week on thursday from Bud Clary and Bud Clary actually over paid my taxes and registration by about $380. So DMV is refunding Bud Clary and Bud Clary will refund me. I had to push Bud Clary a little bit to get my packet sent to the DMV, but nothing too crazy. They were busy and ended up Fedex'ing my packet about 2 days after they said they originally would. No big deal.
I got to the DMV and immediately drove through the VIN verification line and got the truck inspected--took about 30 minutes total. I then walked into the DMV, waited about 10 minutes for my number to be called, and they handed me my plates and stickers. The entire process at DMV took about an hour (yes i got lucky, timing and day was right --Tuesday around 3pm).
Prior to the DMV, last week i got the truck smogged and weighed at a verified truck scale. The scale ticket was not required as the DMV already had the weight of the truck entered into their system--Im guessing from the certificate of origin.
Easy easy and 4 thumbs up to Bud Clary for the entire process from start to finish.
