I am on a public auction site primarily for land in AZ that gets abandoned due to non-payment of taxes. But when there are no land sales, I will see what other items are available in my area.

Couple of weeks ago I see an auction pop up for a very nice heavy duty ambulance 300 miles from me. It's bid up to $1500 and appears to be in excellent condition. The wheels in my head start turning to try and justify why I need a 2010 IH 4400 ambulance.

Turns out, I have a pretty good reason!

Camping! My current rig is a well-used Fleetwood pop-up camper I inherited a couple of years ago. I cleaned it up, did an axle flip to give it high ground clearance, and did a bunch of restoration work to it. I took it camping once and realized it was barely better than tent camping.

I realized that I wanted/needed a hardsided camper/RV that was ready to go with most of the needed supplies already loaded and could be driven to the woods easily while bringing along my ATV.

I could go with either a 16' - 19' RV with some ground clearance, or a class C motorhome that could tow a utility trailer with the ATV in back.

The towable RV using my lifted Ram 2500 on 37" tires and my ATV in the bed was the logical choice. Pretty sure I could find a used RV with those specs for well under $20k.

But then, I found the ambulance. It was under $10k, had a very solid chassis and powertrain, and there was a cult following of the "lifestyle" of converting these ambulances to RVs and using them as everything from weekend campers to year-round mobile tiny homes and offices.

Long story short; I won the auction for this beautiful beast...

I will be going and picking it up in a couple of weeks.

My girlfriend is chomping at the bit in terms of design ideas for the interior. I have been watching a ton of videos on how folks have been converting these and am pretty stoked in regards to the possibilities.

Looking forward to watching the transformation. Congrats and good luck.

Awesome!

I’m about 20% done with a sprinter campers build, it’s a lot of fun.

Not that I have the most experience, but I highly suggest backwards planning the build off of intended use. We knew we wanted a big comfortable bed, lots of water, lots of heat, some A/C, and a big fridge. The rest of the build is falling in around those components.
