Blackened Build

Oh, that's nice! So many directions you can go with that. Love it. Good luck.

Man, I haven't updated my build thread in quite some time, and so much has changed. I'm going to attempt to do a better job of both my build and adventures, but no promises.

First, let's start with where I currently am. (I'll probably post some pictures later to "show everything off").

I acquired a RSI SmartCap about a year ago, that overall has been treating me well, but I'm still struggling with some leak issues. Assuming that I can get the leak issues sorted out, I'll be pretty happy with it. I keep toying with a flatbed + canopy build, but we will see where that lands due to the high cost.

I've been stuffing parts away for the winter and acquiring some additional ones. As soon as my bumper lands, I'll be able to get a majority of the stuff slapped on and ready for some more summer adventures, at least as time allows.

Current list of things waiting to go on the truck:
  • Expedition One front bumper with bullbar (waiting for it to arrive)
  • Badlands 12k winch with synthetic line
  • Hardkorr lighting for smart cap (interior and exterior)
  • Airbags
List of items I need to finalize purchase of:
  • ARB dual compressor to control bags and airing up/down (and lockers in the future)
  • Diode Dynamics lighting (bumper forward "fogs", distance lighting, a pillar lights)
  • SDHQ a-pillar light mounts
  • "Secondary/aux" battery and controller
Finally, I still need to figure out my mapping/controls plan. I've been back and forth on this for weeks at this point. I am still looking seriously at the ARB linx, especially as they have recently opened the APK for users to install on any android device. I looked seriously at leveraging my garmin unit with the power switch, but it's very limited with what sort of apps I can install for controlling everything.

My current plan of record is the following. Buy an Android tablet and is it for off-road mapping (gaia and on-x offroad), a hard button controller (auxswitch, voswitch, etc.) to control the compressor on/off and lights, and a hard mounted airbag controller. Then leverage the ARB compressor app for airing tires up/down.

The biggest downside to this is that I'd have so many integration points (hard buttons for lights/compressor/lockers, hard paddle control for airbags, app for airing up/down tires). I still may give the ARB linx a shot, but it's obviously not as ideal for on the fly, since it's a touch screen vs hard buttons, but it would reduce the number of components I'm adding.

Anyway, more to come as I continue the build. My wife and I are also getting rid of our current travel trailer for something much smaller, but still a ways off from formalizing exactly what that looks like.
