Is it better to have your rims painted or powder coated? Does it really make a difference? The guys at the tire shop didn’t seem to think one was more durable than the other, assuming they were done properly. I’m wanting them to match the appearance of the black ones from the factory.

Like Burn’n Oil said, the powder coating will outlast and take a lot more beating than any paint could ever take. You’ve got to remember that once they spray the part with the powder, due to the electrical charge used to draw the powder to every little crack, and then bake that on, there are less places for oil / grime / road salts to get under the paint and ruin the finish.

Powder coating it was.

Thanks for posting the pics, it looks great! I may try that. I think the silver looks goofy on my blue truck. How much did you pay?

I actually went through Discount Tire to have them done. I had to take the wheels off myself, as they wouldn't store the vehicle on jack stands at their store. I brought them the wheels (tires still on) on Monday morning. They took off and stored the tires. Their vendor picked the rims up, did the work overnight, and dropped them back off the next morning. They called me at about 1:00 pm on Tuesday and they were ready for pickup with the tires mounted and balanced. I was quoted between $135-155 per wheel at the store, plus $11 per wheel to mount and balance. They ended up charging me $600 out the door. I also had to buy the black plastic hubs from the dealer, as the wheel shop wouldn't paint them. Part number was 6PG01RXFAA, and my local dealer charged me $11.20 each. They did have to order them, and they weren't at the local distribution hub so it took a few days for them to come in. The finish of the wheel was a satin, and is a damn close match to the plastic center caps.
