Best motor oil choice

FROM GOOGLE

For your Ram diesel (Cummins 6.7L engine), use a manufacturer-approved oil, such as API CK-4/CJ-4 certified oil, with a 5W-40 or 10W-30 viscosity depending on your climate, or a 15W-40 for heavy towing. Valvoline Premium Blue is a Cummins-endorsed option, but other quality brands like AMSOIL, Rotella, and Pennzoil that meet the specifications also work well. Always check your owner's manual for specific recommendations and for your truck's model year.

Oil Type & Grade
  • Specification:
Use an oil that meets the API CK-4 or CJ-4 specification and is designed for diesel engines.
    • 5W-40: is recommended for cold climates (below -18°C or 0°F) and general use.

    • 10W-30: can be used in warmer temperatures (above -18°C or 32°F).

    • 15W-40: is often recommended for heavy trailer towing conditions.
Key Considerations
  • Owner's Manual:
Always check your specific Ram owner's manual for the precise oil recommendation and oil capacity for your model year.

  • Climate:
Choose a viscosity grade suitable for your local climate.

  • Heavy Use:
If you frequently tow, an oil with a higher viscosity like 15W-40 might be more appropriate, and you should also follow shorter oil change intervals.

  • Oil Quality:
Synthetic oils, such as Shell Rotella T6 or Valvoline Premium Blue, are excellent choices because they provide superior protection for the extreme conditions of a diesel engine.
What to Avoid
  • Gasoline-Specific Oils:
Do not use oil designed for gasoline engines, as it will not provide the necessary protection for your diesel engine.

  • Overly Thick Oils:
Avoid oils that are too thick, which can impede performance and fuel economy, as thick oil does not always equal better protection

I use what Cummins endorses for our rural Western Slope Rocky Mountain climate which is the Valvoline Premium Blue in our 2024 Ram 3500 Cummins. It's easier to obtain right off the shelf being there's a Napa Auto Parts store within driving distance. It's the only store that sells diesel motor oil at just under 30 miles from our home. Wal-Mart is a bit further, but it doesn't carry diesel oil being it's a small size store. My son switched back from Valvoline Premium Blue 5W-40 to 15W-40 with Redline in his 2014 Ram 2500 Cummins in rural Wyoming. Both climates get far below 0F during winter, so engine block heaters are used on both engines. Redline makes a 5W-40 that meets my Cummins requirements too.

Buy whatever oil you think does the job . I have 3 million miles of driving my own semi trucks . When I started in the late 70s oil changes were done at 5k , later it became 10 k then 15 k I think it is about 20 now . Point being the additive packages and syn oil gets better as time goes on . Using def has reduced the amount of soot going into the oil because the amount of EGR was reduced . There is no need to change your oil early under normal operating conditions unless you just like wasting your money . Never did on six new class 8 trucks and 4 pickups, never a problem related to oil .

FYI 15w40 oil is not Approved for using in the 2019 and newer 6.7L Cummins engines do to the fact they changed from flat tappet style lifter to hydraulic roller lifter...

Google also missed the fact that Pennzoil doesn’t have a CK-4 offering. AI is like the new guy on all the forums.
