I'm planning out my accessories before Christmas and wanted to get a little feedback.

I've had mostly uncovered beds. I bought a used truck once that had a soft tonneau, liked it enough I bought one for the truck I just got rid of. Made sense vs a tri-fold on a half ton with only 5 1/2 ft of bed.

My father-in-law talks up the hard fold up covers, but I don't see the advantage over the soft cover. His argument is he found one he could stand on...but he also said he bought a Yeti koozie because it will keep his open beer cold for hours... What do you guys have and do you get any real world utility over a soft tonneau? I can get a nice soft tonneau for under $250 so for me it's the default option unless there is a reason to spend more.

I like the soft roll-up tonneau. I bought a Tyger one off of Amazon for my 1500 and moved it over to my 2500 when I upgraded this year. It's been going strong for 4 years at under $200. So, even if it only lasts a few more years I've gotten my money's worth out of it. I don't see the point in standing on your tonneau, unless you need to haul on top like you would with a DiamondBack. The 2500 is the road-trip vehicle for the family, so we put everything in the bed under the tonneau. It won't keep people out if they want to get in, but helps deter. I live in the woods, so does a good job of keeping the leaves out, as well.

That's exactly how we used the soft cover on my 2019 1500, along with a bed rug that was great for everything except fishing hooks. Soap and a pressure washer got the bed rug as clean as a spray liner. Unfortunately since that was the new design none of my accessories fit the new truck.

I ordered a Tri-Fold Hard top from Ram-Mopar 2 months ago still don't have it they say they are on back order

i have the Mopar tri fold bed cover on my 2500 and i like it a lot.
for the record, none of the tri-folds are 100% water tight. if you're on the highway in a driving rain, some water is def going to get in.
the Mopar one i have has aluminum under the fabric panels, so although you cna't stand on it- it def offers protection from anyone trying to slice through it and steal whatever's in your bed.
hope that helps.

The soft vinyl rollup cover should work for your needs. It's four times less expensive than the BakFlip MX4 hard cover on my 8-foot bed. This is my third hard cover on as many trucks. The sun/UV kills non-hard covers in southern Arizona.

I have also used a Tyger cover (Tacoma) and it is great for the money. Love that it keeps the snow out of my bed in the winter, and gives me a place to store suitcases when traveling. Definitely doesn't have the features that more expensive tri-fold covers have.

A friend with a 1500 had the Mopar semi-rigid soft tonneau cover and it was absolutely ruined by some turd trying to steal his snow board. I have just moved my BakFlip rigid 4 piece folding cover from my 4G 2500 to my new 4.5G 3500. It is the latest model and you can open and close the tailgate against it. It can carry a 200lb load on top and is easily removed if requiring the whole bed at full height (you lose about 4 inches at the front if you need to use full height full length). Folds upright against the Back Rack headache bar and secures easily, thought their instructions say it won't. It sits flush with the bed top plastics not above them.

Not cheap but a good bit of kit.

I considered the type that looks like a roller shutter door which has some advantages but a friend with and F150 said it had rubbish latch system.

Where I live unfortunately if they are gonna break in a hard cover isn't going to stop them. I've seen them smashed caveman style. The security value is in being out of sight and requires more work than an unlocked door. Beyond that I would not rely on it.

I had a soft cover on an old truck and someone slashed it .., I had nothing in the bed at the time but guessing they were hopeful. Last truck had the 4 panel bakflip and loved it except the front panel went back towards the tailgate so I had to take it off entirely sometimes. It was surprising how many times I put things on top of the tonnea, and it carried the weight just fine. Aside from that my major complaint was it covered the part of the box rails.
A friend of mine has a 4 fold that’s flush with the rails, so I’m leaning towards one like that. I also like the ability to use the tonneau as back window protection, but I’ve never needed it yet.
Anyways, keep us posted what you pick !

I have a Rugged Liner HC3 hard tri-fold on order. From what I've read on reviews, a lot of the other brand hard tri-folds leak water. The Rugged Liner ones seem to have the best reviews for keeping water out so I rolled the dice on it. The other reason I went with this particular type is there are no rails. If you take it off there's nothing there to get in the way of a truck camper etc.

i have the under cover armour flex. Its been great on the farm. Very hard to scratch with line-x coating on it so tools banging on it are no problem.

I had a Bak MX4 hard-flip on my last truck. Was 95% water resistant. Unfortunately, it got dimpled all over with light hail. Light enough that the aluminum hood didn't take any damage, but the cover got beat up good.

If I got another cover I would be aiming to find something with strength over anything else. The make a tougher one like FX4 or something like that but I've seen a thread on a forum saying theirs got beat up by hail too.

Out of 4 trucks, the folding hard cover was on 1 of them. All others have been soft roll up Truxedo covers. More forgiving with loads higher than the bedsides, new vinyl cover (parts) is less than $100 last time I checked. Longest my covers have lasted is 6 years before holes and cracking of the vinyl.

I installed the truxedo x15 about a month ago. First tonneau cover on anything I've owned so I can't comment on much other than simplicity of installation along with fit and finish. All of which were great!! I was leaving for a college inspection tour with my daughter and needed something in stock locally. Last few trucks had canopies which always seemed to be 1/2" shorter than what I needed to haul. I love being able to keep stuff outta sight with the ability to roll it up and have plenty of clearance for taller stuff.

I just put on the Truxedo Deuce 2 cover. I figured I would give it a shot since it is the only rolling soft cover (that I could find) that also has a the ability to quickly fold-up from the front for easy access without rolling up the whole cover. I wanted a cover that was easy to take off, if needed and would still give me quick front access. I like it so far and have a bedrug underneath.

I got a Truxedo Deuce so I can fold it back from the front while my camping trailer is hitched. I find that the tongue jack keeps me from opening the tailgate so the Deuce makes it easy to get to stuff in the bed.

I also have the Truxedo Deuce. Do either of you have leaks at the Front of your bed with the Deuce? I was having major water leaks, so I replaced the original bulkhead seal tape with a bulb type seal and the leaking reduced significantly. Also, any trouble getting the front to fully latch without having to lean on both sides at the latch?

I haven't noticed any front end leaks yet, and the front flap looks like it lays wells against the tape provided. It did take a bit of time to straighten out after install, but I made sure I pulled the flap out straight for the first couple weeks. Regarding the front closing, I was aggrevated with this as well. At first it seemed like it wouldn't find the opposite side slot if I closed it quickly, so I would have to close it gently and press on both sides. Now that it has settled, I close it with a little force and try to angle the opposite side to hit first and it closes all the way.

My only current gripe is that I have to flip the back up when I close the tailgate so the back flap doesn't fold underneath. It was annoying at first, but now I doesn't bother me as much anymore.

I have the same problem with my camper. Those electric tongue jacks are nice but man they get in the way. I wish they would relocate the controls, about the only purpose that light serves is being forgotten about and draining the battery.

My wife had Santa deliver a cover yesterday, should be the same one I had on the last truck. Never had any issues other than some dampness right at the tailgate.
