I am wondering when time comes for battery replacement or just even upgrading.. what is everyone choosing and why/for what purpose? I lean towards the more premium end of the market and through my limited research have come up with names like Odyseey, Optima and of course the OEM's. For my use case, I have some auxiliary electrical loads from off-road lighting to in the future getting a winch. If I run a overlanding fridge I plan on getting a separate either house battery or portable lithium that are popular these days.. but I may still plug it into the truck at times.

I know our trucks and warmup cycles like to have a stab at the battery so overkill is my motto typically. However I am not opposed to staying with what works if OEM be the case or so on. I also realize that this discussion may go in different places due to it being for the Hemi or my beloved CTD. But I thought it would be worthwhile information for everybody.

Optima is not what it used to be. Odyssey is tops in the battery market. I ran them in my Powerstroke Bronco for 10 years. Currently running Deka's only because I dont work for the Odyssey parent company anymore so I lost my employee purchase price, and the free Deka's that I wrote off in my service dept were much more appealing this time around.

I have never had an issue with Optimas the draw from the plow and cold temps never bother them they last a long time for me i will keep buying em

Nice, good info guys and I can imagine with the cold and plow, the Optima has earned its weight in your truck @H3LZSN1P3R .. Do you have a part number? IS it the red topped ones or yellow out of curiosity? I too found Odyssey to be always mentioned with good results.

I ran Duracell AGM's with good luck from Sam's on my last two truck when the OEM's went bad and plan to do the same on my current truck.

Just the red tops yes, i dont have a part number as i have not changed the ones in my 19 yet but when the die i will be going red tops again

I have a 2019 6.7 Cummins. The manual says batteries will last 3-5 years. It is now 5 years. I'm thinking I should replace them proactively. Does that make sense?

Of course there are two batteries. Are they both the same? Would you have dealer replace them?

Thanks!

No dealers should not replace them and no i would not change them without testing them first

Deka, made in USA, they have other rebranded batteries out there. Just look for the stars n stripes on the label.

My experiance is that the newer vehicles do not give you the slow crank warning of an impending battery failure...you come out one day and bam...dead battery. Buy one of the small battery jump starters and keep it in your vehicle(s). You can find them pretty reasonablely priced. As far as having the dealer replace, I weigh the cost vs convienence...remove batt, drive to batt store, wait for counter person to find the one I need in inventory, pay and drive home with new batt(s) and install. Sometimes the dealer batts are the same price as the batt store and will install for free/no charge. The batt Interstate store by me charges $25 to install.
