When I purchased my 2015 1500 I figured job one would be some kind of protection for the hood leading edge. The design of the grill / hood seemed like rock chips waiting to happen. Fast forward 6 years when I traded it, there was not a single chip on the hood leading edge and I had never done any kind of bug deflector or protection film. I'm not saying that I never had to wash bugs off, just that there were no paint chips to deal with. I'm now in the same position with my 3500 thinking that I better get some kind of protection....but wondering in the back of my mind if it will be like my 1500. No chips in the 3500 yet. Any words of wisdom?

Anyone getting rock chips on the hood leading edge?

My 2013 RAM 2500 with 125k+ had rock dings on the leading edge of the hood. I put a WeatherTech bug guard on my 2020 RAM 3500, with the same exposure.
Needed?? Must have?? Maybe not. But I have it now.
When I get mine Im thinking PPF plus bug deflector. I saw a Black night edition 3500 limited today at the dealer parked out side waiting for service. The front of the truck was spattered all over the grill, bumper and edge with stone chips

At a minimum, I recommend PPF. Even with the PPF, I’m considering a bug deflector simply to preserve the windshield a bit from rocks.

I might do the PPF, still on the fence, but no deflector, they sit so flat to the hood, my dually sits straight up and I have to keep removing it to clean out pine needles etc., getting stuck between the deflector and the edge of the hood, can you you even get a rag under the new ones, but they may help with the hood flexing I,m hearing about at highway speeds ?
I have a dually and never have a problem with stuff getting stuck in the deflector. My wash mitt slides easily under the deflector. Don’t have any hood deflection.

up here they use a brine ( salt water sort of as a deicer on the roads and salt ) this garbage gets everywhere and you have to touch it to remove, most hood deflectors wrap around and under the hood to attach and this is where i could see some build up and maybe deflector rub ( if you loose the rubber button stick ons ) and possible rust point. I might get one if it reduces the hood flutter like you said

My concern has been the very leading edge of the hood. PPF applications that I’ve seen go down to the leading edge but don’t actually wrap around that edge and onto the underside of the hood. Can PPE be applied so that it totally covers that leading edge and wraps around to the underside of the hood?
