Android Auto and Data Usage

With the exception of towing (I'm buying a Garmin for RV nav), I do like having Android Auto engaged for regular navigation and listening to music from my phone. The voice-text is pretty sweet with AA too. Question: Anyone have a sense of how much data Google Maps uses during navigation? Not sure if anyone has attempted to calculate how much data/hr is being sucked up when navigating. I have a minimal GB plan (2GB/mo shared) and I've run into data usage issues pretty quickly when using AA on some trips of 2 hours or more. I need to upgrade my data plan but didn't want to do unlimited with my carrier (Verizon) just for AA.

I'm on Wifi a majority of the time so my data usage is normally pretty low each month.

You can see how much data any app on your phone has used on Android. Just look at it before you go on a trip, then after.

Google maps does allow you to download areas for navigation, if you do this when on wifi then turn off data when using maps.
That's an option but don't you lose real-time traffic and routing information?

Yes, but if you only have minimal data, what's an extra minute in traffic.
I hear ya. If I can see how much data I use as Zrojas suggested, that should help with choosing a data plan upgrade. Thx Gentlemen.

Just make sure you look at the Maps app and not just the Android Auto app when you are looking for your data usage. I use quite a bit of mobile data. At least 20 GB per month. My AA data is usually under 10MB. Maps is usually in the 300MB-500MB range but it varies a lot depending on my travels. This year has not seen a lot of traveling for me.

I have waze or gmaps running anytime I'm in the truck. I am liberal with my usage, don't care if it's wifi or mobile. I average between 42 to 55gb per month. I've never looked at the breakout. I do 4 to 5 trips tx - co- tx per year.
