Air Horns!

Yesterday, while leaving Colorado Springs after an appointment, I encountered another distracted driver in some little rollerskate. Needless to say, the horns that is placed into these trucks are more of a joke as she was still honed into phone call and less on her surroundings. So. I am thinking air horns or horns loud enough to alert the distracted driver that their car just cut me off by the thickness of a sheet of paper.

Any suggestions?

BTW-I don't really want to go train horns since they're illegal!
 
I think VIAIR makes an air horn kit that also doubles as an onboard air system. May want to check them out.
 
I think the horn on these trucks are actually quite good. Gets peoples attention much better than in other vehicles I’ve had.
Better suggestion is to avoid the Springs :p

I have OBA on my truck, primarily for airing up after trail rides, considered air horns but can’t quite justify the cost and complexity of adding a tank, solenoids, etc. Plus in a “emergency” situation like you described you’re not going to look for a small switch or button to hit you just want the big target of the center of the steering wheel to mash.

If you have the AUX switches, set one to operate on “momentary” and you’re all set.

I thought I’d add some pics of the install of the above electronic air horn on my ‘21 3500. There are two perfectly spaced holes on the passenger side frame to mount the speaker.

I used heavy duty outdoor Velcro to mount the small amplifier on top of the aux fuse box. I connected it to the AUX 6 switch which I set to momentary. It’s so loud it makes you blink and cringe a little bit lol.

Since that one is electric, can you not connect it up to the normal horn power and use it as your primary horn and ditch the stock horn?

Yes, this is possible. The horn kit comes with two switches: one momentary and another to toggle between the stock horn and air horn. This requires cutting the horn wire, running wires through the firewall , etc. I suppose you could just tap into the horns under the hood and bypass them and go that route too.

I have the AUX switches so that was a very easy way to complete the install on my truck.

I like that idea. Seems it would be simple with a relay if the system doesn't have that option already. I have a hard enough time hitting the right switch while keeping my eyes on the road. My luck, I would hit the rear LEDs and blind the person behind me and then they run into me while I am avoiding the dimwit who cut me off in the first place :eek:

Its easy to have the big oem horn button wiring trigger the air horn

Happen to have a write-up on where the easy access is?

I haven't bothered to even think about it on my 2020, but tried like an SOB to get at the horn in the wheel well of my 4th gen. Not sure if my hands were too big or if I was going at it from the wrong approach.

I didnt look at this truck but i usually just buy a fuse tap
 
I'm sure it can be done, but could one of the Aux Upfitter switches be used as a toggle to switch between running the factory horns on the factory switch and Air horns on the factory switch? Like say I have Aux 6 setup so when it's on I'm running the air horns, but say I don't want the triple honk to scare the crap out of people in a parking lot when i leave my truck running for my dog I can turn it off and it'll use the factory horn.

I would just use a 5 pin relay, power off to the relay would be factory horn, turn on the relay to switch to your aftermarket horns
