This is just a “how-to” thread for those interested in adding factory passive entry to their trucks. It won’t be a discussion about how useful or useless it may be, or why someone would want to do this.

This one is pretty easy to add, and the only parts you need are the correct proximity door handles, an antenna that mounts behind the license plate (this makes the tailgate handle operate passively), a pair of custom harnesses for the new door handles (PM me for details), and AlfaOBD.

I’ll post all the part numbers and AlfaOBD settings in a separate post below, but I won’t discuss AlfaOBD, or how it works in this thread (there are plenty of threads about it here, and YouTube videos).

If you have a truck that already has body colored handles, or body colored with chrome handles, you only need to buy new front handles for passive entry.
If you have a truck that has the flat black textured handles, you would need to buy new rear handles too, since there is no such thing as passive entry capable handles in flat textured black.

As far as doing the install, the video below pretty much shows you everything on how to do it. I’ll just add some pics of the connectors so you have a clearer view of where to insert the wires of the harnesses I supply.

The driver side harness will have two wires labeled “4C” and “5D”, and these are the positions they insert when looking at the side that the wires are going into:

The passenger side harness will have two wires labeled “4C” and “14C”, and these are their positions:

If anyone wants, the rear handles can be made passive entry also, and I build a custom set of harnesses for that. You would use two front passenger side proximity handles from the parts list to accomplish this.

Here’s the parts list for all the handles based on paint color. (Thanks to @01Time for providing this list originally). If a color is missing, let me know and I will add it.

@Jimmy07 Just want to make sure of something in the table of part numbers you posted. I assume the front handle part numbers listed are passive entry handles, and the rears are just body color regular handles?

Since I (will) have a big horn i will need to buy Billet silver passive entry front handles and billet silver non-passive entry rear handles. I assume I can use the part numbers in that table for both?

That’s correct- the front part numbers are passive entry, and the rear part numbers are regular handles.

Would you happen to have the pin out of the harness from the handle to the door jam plug

Hey buddy, where are you located. I just ordered the parts for my 2024.

I wanted to see if you were close, if you were interested in doing it.

Finally got to doing this, after having the parts for a pretty long time. Just finished the Drivers side, will have to pick up and do the passenger side later, my fingers hurt and its hot outside. Took me about 4 hours to do the drivers side. It was about an hour to get the door handle replaced, and then i spent a while figuring how to route the wire harness, and then the door harness took a while.

A few pointers and comments.
- This youtube video was super helpful in the steps to get the door handle removed.

-Getting the window glass released and pulled up/taped into the frame by myself was not as challenging as I anticipated, but an extra set of hand would hade it easier
-Hardest part was getting the white connector unplugged from the door connector. For whatever reason, that plug was being a major bitch.
-Second hardest part was getting the door connector free from the door jamb.

-Something i didnt see mentioned is you need to remove the door jam connector "outer connector", so that you can release the colored lock plate, by pushing them up from the exposed section on the side of the connector, rather than trying to pry them up with a hook.
To Remove outer shell, there’s a couple clips on the interior you can release. Pretty easy, especially if you’ve made it this far
IMG_2588.jpeg
Also i paid attention to the orientation of the new pins relative to the existing pins looking at the “seam” of the pin (get out the magnifying glass). Not sure if it mattered or if they would even go in the wrong way.
IMG_2592.jpeg

Everything else was pretty straight forward, just a lot little screws, clips, connectors.

IMG_2593.jpeg

For the overlay harness:
I used a Christmas tree zip tie to hold the connector up, then add a stick on clip inside the door, routed the harness over to the latch, and then secured it to that existing harness, punched a hole in the grommet for it to pass thru.IMG_2579.jpegIMG_2582.jpeg
Then I routed the overlay harness along the existing harnesses (add zip ties to secure it later), opened up the door wire clamp and passed the wires thru the accordion hose to plug them into the back of the door connector. I then pulled any slack back to the door side and tidied up the slack with zip tiesIMG_2586.jpegIMG_2587.jpeg

Nice work and great write up. This is one thing I would consider adding to the truck. How much did the parts run you?

I bought all the parts a couple of years ago, but havent gotten around to working on it until now. I think it was like $400 total for the wiring, two door handles, and rear antenna.

Aaaannd passenger side complete. Passenger side was a bit easier, Took about 2 hours vs 4 hours. Partly because I had experience with the other side so I knew generally how it all came apart better, partially because there was less wires and connectors, partly because and had less issue with the door connectors, and also had an extra set of hands for the passenger side which was helpful at times.

If note, only 1 lock rod needs to be disconnected on the passenger side. One is the door lock pull pin that attaches directly to door latch so it can stay attached when you pull the inner panel. I learned this after disconnecting it.

Reserved for rear passive entry install
@Jimmy07 good morning. I am interested in doing the rear passive install. Previous message stated you would build a harness. Is there by chance install steps/video and the AlphaOBD settings for activating the rear. Thank you. I(We) sure do appreciate your knowledge and sharing it with us.

Quoting this and tagging @Jimmy07 because Ive gotten my fronts done and Im about to start the rears. Jimmy do you have a write up or pics for connecting the rear harness to the spot in the door sills? Also are programming changes needed?

So I got everything installed including all of the rear harnesses except I cant figure out where they tie in. They harnesses that have loose ends are labeled with the color wire they are supposed to tap into but thats where Im stuck. When I run the Jimmy07 harness down to the sill and then across until the harness runs out, its right where the huge bundle of wires is and there are multiples of the colors that are needed. How do I know which green/white wire to tap when there are more than one in the bundle? Here is a pic of the driver side rear harness where it is supposed to tap into the door sill. I see that the green wire is supposed to tap into a green/white wire but the big bundle of wires in the sill has multiple green/white wires. In fact, I found more than the two in these pictures, there are at least 3. Or am I looking in the wrong place? Is the harness extra long and Im actually supposed to tie in somewhere else?

Alright I solved my own problem. 2024 Ram 2500 Tradesman Power Wagon.

For the driver side rear passive entry door handle wiring harness from @Jimmy07 it calls for tapping into "green/yellow" and "green/white" in the front door sill. These wires are hard to find since the bundle of wires is so large and there are multiple "green/white" wires. If you look in the rear door sill where the wires are coming directly from the proximity sensor, which is located in the rear bottom corner behind the trim piece(about where your left hip is located when sitting in the back seat) you can see a twisted pair of wires that are "solid green" and "green/white" so you know these are the two you are looking for. If you look through the bundle in the REAR door sill there are a lot less wires so its easier to identify which "green/white" is the correct wire and its also easier to find the "green/yellow." Run the harness from Jimmy07 through the B pillar and rearward to the rear door sill and tap into the wires there.

Here you can see the proximity sensor and the "green" and "green/white" wires.
IMG_5905.jpeg

Trace that "green/white" wire down to the bottom of the door sill (it actually stays as a twisted pair through the whole bundle of wires in the harness) and tap into it with the wire from Jimmy07's harness that has the "green/white" label. (mine was solid green)
IMG_5906.jpeg

Then search in that same smaller rear door sill bundle of wires for the "green/yellow" and you will find it more easily. Tap that one with the other end of Jimmy07's harness that is labeled "green/yellow" (mine was red) and you are good to go for the passenger side.
IMG_5907.jpeg

Now for the passenger side. This one was even more tricky because neither of the wires coming out of the proximity sensor match what the harness from Jimmy07 says they should be. You actually need to go into the larger bundle of wires in the FRONT door sill to find the matches. I must have counted 5 different times before I actually found a "green/orange" wire that was called for by Jimmy07. I didnt take any pictures of my harness from Jimmy07 tapped into the bundle of wires but they matched up once I actually found the two correct wires.

Here is a picture of the passenger rear proximity sensor with "white/green" and "blue" wires. I initially tapped these in the rear door sill and it did not work. I had to run the Jimmy07 harness up to the front door sill and tap into the wires called for on Jimmy07's harness to get everything to work. Im not sure why mine wouldnt work when tapped into these wires. Its possible that my tap job was done poorly and you could tap these two but for now I will say DONT tap these two wires. Go into the front passenger door sill and tap the wires that Jimmy07's harness calls for.

Haven't seen this asked anywhere yet. Which wire from the door harness goes to which position on the handle harness?

Just completed the install (haven't programmed yet) and made the harnesses myself.

For anyone that needs, here's the wiring pinout for the front driver and passenger doors.
  • Pin 1 on both handles is sense, Pin 2 is return
  • For drivers side, Sense (Pin 1) goes to 4C and Return (Pin 2) goes to 5D
  • For passengers side, Sense (Pin 1) goes to 4C and Return (Pin 2) goes to 14C

I did the passive entry upgrade on my 2022 Ram 2500 Bighorn. Works great

But I’m getting a Check engine light for BCM Error. Anyone else run into this ? I cleared code and came back the next day
