AC Fix TSB (Pre 8/20 build trucks)

So turns out whoever performed the TSB didn’t reassemble the steering column in my truck correctly. Could have easily killed my wife and kids today, thankfully it only came apart at the inside of the firewall when she was pulling into my driveway.

This is how I found it when I looked to find out why the steering wheel was turning completely freely.

I assume there is a nut that’s supposed to be on the other side of that bolt? I couldn’t find that nut anywhere, I assume somebody forgot to put it back on after taking apart the dash.

The clock spring is broken now because the wheel got turned too far. Air bag lights and stability control lights are on.

You can imagine my mood.

Please check your steering column after the TSB so this doesn’t happen to you.
It's a through bolt, crappy dealer!

Only issue I had with mine is they cut the leather bezel around the 4x4 panel, and apparently the same tech that fixed the improperly installed from the factory passenger A-pillar trim to dash connection must have also worked on this because the rubber seal wasn't tucked in just like the prior fix. Sheesh. Made them replace the panel of course.

Otherwise I haven't had any issue other than the driver side defrost is still absolutely worthless.
My air don't work worth a crap but I will say my heater and defrost have been doing great, at least down to low negative temps. I have not been lucky enough to have any minus 20-30's stuff the last couple of years..

That is very odd as i have no issue with the defrost across my whole windshield i wonder if something is in the vent blocking it

It's coming out the driver side, but nothing to speak of at the very left edge. It was like this before the TSB. If it's below 0 and blowing hard the windshield will ice up with the defrost going full blast.

Sometimes on installation the doors can get tweaked so they don't move properly, a little bit fragile.

We all have different defrost issues it seems.

My defrost is on all the time no matter what setting I’m using.
We had that problem in an older Grand Cherokee. Turned out it was a vacuum problem. Without enough vacuum the HVAC system would default to having defrost on. I have no idea about our trucks system. Does it even use vacuum for HVAC or is it all electric?

Holy crap!

i have some similar issues after the TSB was done. My theory is sometimes those blend doors don't open or close all the way. Recently (using the heat,) i get cold air out of some vents and warm air out of others. I've complained to the dealer but at this point I feel like the dealer is understaffed and the staff they do have is not qualified to diagnose it. I get frustrated when I make an appointment for service and the truck just sits at the dealer for a week and no one even looks at it. Maybe I'm just being a miserable SOB!

No vacuum on a Cummins. Some of the old 5.9L trucks (2nd gen?) had a vacuum pump but otherwise (currently) there is none. That would make every system in every truck the same setup.

To clarify, my other vent settings all work. But, the defrost is still always on with any other setting. I can have a/c set for torso/dash vents and it will frost the windshield up eventually. That’s how I first noticed it.

I would have prefered the old cable setup instead of the vaccum systems i had in a couple of my 2nd gens what a pain

Defrost is the default mode and usually leaks a little all the time, sounds like yours more than that Brutal_HO

Yea, I might just push my cheapo borescope in the vent and see what's in there.

I've even considered 3d printing a vent hood to redirect more to the outside...

I hope I don't have to resort to:

when i direct the heat to the floor only I can feel cool air coming from somewhere. i suspect the defrost isn't closed completely and it's just leaking cool air. Annoying

did they put it back together so you can not tell it has been ripped apart?

Local Dealer did a great job putting everything back (both times)... the first blend door they replaced was faulty and I had a whistling sound on the highway.
