6 gallon fuel reserve for 6.4?

I’m sure it’s posted somewhere in here. But, I’ve never filled up more than 25.xx gallons. That being said. Low fuel light comes on at 50 miles left and I’ll normally refill then but, forget to time to time and drive down to past when it flashes below 10 miles left. Yet most I get at the pump is 25 gallons and some change and if I squeeze some more never passing 26 gallons. Point being we have 5-6 gallons that are unaccounted for in the DIC? If that makes sense?
 
That’s about right, that’s how my truck is, 25-26 gal fills ups and a 31 gal capacity.

My work truck (tundra) is the same 26.4 capacity, never takes more than 19-20 even when I run it to zero range
 
My 19 CTD is the same i have a 32 gal tank and the most i can get it to take is 28 gal and thats when the DTE was no longer showing the DTE
 
So does that mean it really is a 30/31/32 gallon tank with 4-5 extra gallons left even when it states only 10 miles left?
If it read 0 miles left there would actually be several gallons of usable fuel left to use?

In theory yes but how much of that is useable fuel where the fuel pickup can get it. If i had a gasser id test the theory but i wont be trying to see how far it can go after the truck DTE stops reading with my CTD
 
Technically, yes, there is still 5-6 gallons in the tank. As mentioned it's there as a safety buffer. Probably fine to use if you are driving on flat ground. Don't drive on any long grades with 0 miles showing on the DTE. You'll starve the pickup of fuel.
 
Yes, low fuel light comes on at 50 miles. I've gone 50 miles after that once, and put in 26.8 gallons. (31 gallon tank) I was towing though.

Seems that there is about 5 gallons left when it should be zero miles DTE normally. Could not tell you how much is useable though. My wife gets nervous when the 50 miles DTE chimes.

In the 2011 Ram, ran out of gas pushing it once. One mile short of the gas station. Put a half gallon in (poured out of the generator) and when I filled, it took just over 33 gallons on a 34 gallon tank. So I am guessing, on that truck, the last 3 quarts are unusable.

In the 'old' days when ever I'd buy a used car (back then - early '70s - they were $200-$300) I'd check to find out how accurate the gas gauge was by bringing along a full 1-gallon gas can and go drive down a country road until the car ran out of gas. Then I'd mark on the gauge where 'empty' was, pour in the gallon from the can and head back to town. Some of the gauges on those used cars back then were really off. A couple of mine (one was a 1958 Ford sedan) would be empty when the gauge was on 1/4. Quick and simple test. I never ran out of gas unless I was an idiot.

I did the same it saved me a couple of times lol

I got fooled by my brothers Comanche once. He left it at my house and borrowed my car to drive to California. Week or so goes by and I decide to drive the truck one day. It has a rough start but runs and dies one stop sign from the house. I try to start troubleshooting the truck and call him. He asks me if it has fuel and I said yea but the light came on when I got to the stop sign. He said if the lights on you're out of fuel, you can’t let the light come on. Hardly handy to have a light that tells you after you’re dry
 
Same for me, haven't run it down to 0 DTE, but usually fill up around 30 or so. Then I get around 25gal into the 31gal tank.
Assuming those 6 gal are usable, that would get me another 90 miles, or a fifth of the entire tank.

I suppose that is to prevent people from actually stranding with an empty tank...
