5w40 vs. 10w30 vs..... 5w30?

Never experienced that issue on mine, and it’s had 10w30 in the sump since the first oil change. 3 years and 53k on it now, and oil changed every 10k. Our winters usually see lows in the teens, with some occasional single digits. Zero valve train noise at any point. What brand of 10w30 were you using?
Amsoil 10w30 DTT compared to 5w40 DEO

It will not be easy to use a filter socket, you’ll want a filter wrench.
I assume a filter socket won't be helpful because access to the bottom of the filter and the room to maneuver a ratchet just isn't there. Side access to the filter looks fairly easy so probably a pliars-type filter wrench is the ticket.

The old style band filter wrench or a large pair of channel locks works great
