5th wheel hitch choices a 2019 Ram 3500 short bed

I miss understood the question earlier....there's no need to open the tailgate there is enough clearance. while turning. When the coupler is mounted on the king pin its mounted on there backwards for shortbed trucks for this exact reason...to give enough clearance so you don't hit the tail gate. I could go almost to a 90 degree turn with the Andersen...but to tell you the truth I wouldn't want to turn that sharp on any 5th wheel unless I really had too as its really hard on the axles and tires as it puts them on a bind. What is nice about the Andersen that you can't do with a 5th wheel hitch....is I can connect at any angle whereas the 5er you have to back straight on to connect....the Andersen is on a ball so angle and the slope doesn't matter as much as the 5th wheel hitch. Then at the end of the trip its very easy to pull out of the truck as it only weighs 35lbs.

The key with the Andersen is follow all torque specs and then recheck them after you tow say once a day or so if your going across country.

Thanks Cummins. I'm leaning towards the Anderson hitch set up for my 3500 MegaCab (on the way). I will measure my 5er and see what the distances are from pin to the edges. A lot of the newer models seem to have pointy ends to help reduce the possibility of contact. As long as I can get to 80 degrees, I'd be happy with that.

Great pics. I can't tell, do you have the rails for a tonneau cover? What do you think your turn angle to the cab is?
I have the Retrax Power Retractable cover with side rails. I believe it’s about 75-80 degree turn. Going to check with RV people to see if I should adjust the hitch to raise it a bit. It looks like it’s sitting inside of the bed too much by 1-2 inches.

I’ll be going goosebox for sure. Throw the RAM B&W ball in with the factory puck and 5th wheel system, add some chains and call it good. Still room to put a 40gal tank in the bed and have room.

This is my plan also. I was looking at a B&W slider, but that thing takes up the whole bed.

The Goosebox + B&W ball is so clutch. Rides great, full bed access when not hooked up, great turning radius even with the shorter bed. It's a no-brainer IMO.

Love my BlueOx system. Have had mine since Jan and the pad was showing it was wearing and BlueOx sent me a new one at no charge said it shouldn’t do that. Brand New.

I have owned a slider and though it’s a great hitch I used the slider once in 5 years and that was to make sure it still worked. Additionally when pulling it in and out of the bed it gets very heavy quickly especially if you have the B&W that has a shank for the ball location on the B&W gooseneck. Gets expensive quick especially if you have a truck or ordered one with the factory prep.

I used an Andersen Ultimate Hitch in my 2500 and have now moved it into my 3500. Works like a champ. I was actually thinking of replacing it w/ a B&W slider because of how high you have to raise the camper to get up and over the ball and then back down. Now that I have my 3500 (which is about 1-½" to 2" lower stock) and then the airbags to lower another inch when hitching up, it takes no time at all now to get the camper on the truck. I'm now reconsidering that thought and am probably going to keep it. I love it - so light and easy to move. Never had issues w/ clearance either. I pull a 40' Open Range too and have not had an issue backing in or cornering.

What’s the hitch weight of that beast?

have yet to hit the scales but gross of the trailer is 12Klbs that 210 gallons of fresh grey and black water tanks full personal effects 6 lbs of propane.
but i never haul full tanks thats well over 180 lbs i dont have to worry about. and with payload of 2500 lbs my 1500 lb pin weight is nothing.
set the cruise at 65-70 and you don even notice it there. plus 15-17 mpg on flat land towing

theu curt was under $900 same hitch from ram at $1600 and the pull right splider at $2000-$2500

I run the 13K version of this hitch in my 2500 pulling a GD 29RS

Got nothing but good things to say about my new set up.

80* turning radius too so not bad (disclaimer this is with my reflection by grand design so the cap might be different)
