I drove my 2020 2500 from Chicago burbs to Keystone CO a week ago for spring break with the family. Once in Keystone we didn’t travel very far and used the truck to get from our condo to the mountain each day, maybe 1-2miles depending on which lot we parked in.

Yesterday morning I ran into Silverthorne to wash the truck and clean the mess a week of skiing and winter roads had left inside and out on the truck. On the way the cluster flashed exhaust regen in process continue to drive during regen or something along those lines. I’ve never seen this message before ever. Within 60 seconds of that message it told me DPF full reduced power, see dealer.

I stopped by the dealer and they informed me they could not force a regen as the filter was too plugged up and it would need to be replaced.

This dealer went above and beyond. They made a 3 hour round trip to get a filter from the dealer in Boulder, and then installed it and got me on my way. They provided a loaner for me and my family to cruise around in while we waited. Groove Jeep Ram Subaru in Silverthorne CO was incredible. Huge thanks to them!

I will say this is my first 6.7 I have not deleted. I am super disappointed this happened and now may have trust issues with this truck. It’s daily driven on the highway and a drive it pretty hard. I am shocked the DPF was plugged and bad.

Anyone else have similar experience? I refuse to delete this time as I want my warranty…but this kind of nonsense sucks

Pics or it didn’t happen

Sorry to here she piled up. Lucky it happened at a place where there were good people to help that’s for sure. Don’t know how but maybe there was some defect with the original. Very frustrating regardless.

Very unusual for that to happen . I know with class 8 trucks periodically you have to take the DPF out and have cooked . Back then it was about 400 . I guess they don't do that with smaller ones . You can monitor your DPF capacity on your screen .

Sorry to hear that. Props to the dealer for fixing it up, that's awesome to hear!

They will clean these too

Make sure youre not going too far between oil changes. Next time you get a chance check the oil level every 500 miles and just be sure you're not putting diesel into the crankcase when it regens (you'll see higher oil on the dipstick). If so that is going to cause these problems.

Unless you have serious engine issues you wont be getting diesel in the oil let alone while regening

I suppose better the DPF then the CP4..Glad they went above and beyond and got you back on the road.

The regen process allows unburnt diesel out on the exhaust stroke - this allows the DPF to burn off and clean. Since its on exhaust stroke you can have diesel wash down the cylinder walls. We had 2 dpf diesels that would that - keeping an eye on oil level is important.

I am well aware how the regen works… you would need a significant ring issue to have wash down on a non compression stroke…

I believe that was an issue with the pre-DEF trucks

a reason why you could get a lot of fuel wash down on the cylinder walls, is poor atomization of fuel. Which then dribbles on to the cylinder walls and is scraped by the oil rings. This happens with clogged injectors, injector or fuel pump problems, cold temps with thick diesel especially if it’s diesel from a warm climate being used in cold conditions. Extended idling and never getting the engine up to temp. Of course bad rings can happen. But if you have bad scraper rings you’ll burn oil too. Anyway post injection events not spraying the necessary levels of diesel into the exhaust results in failed regens.

it’s frankly not a great regen design. It’s cheaper. But the better vehicles put another injector into the exhaust to inject fuel so the post injection events aren’t happening in the cylinders. ensures regen diesel makes it to the doc where it’s burned and heats the dpf, instead of in the oil pan, when the engine isn’t running perfectly.

I’ve not had any problems with my ram. But I had problems like this with my bmw 335d which used the Cummins style post injection events for a regen.

It just happened to my 2019 with 40k on it, my def heater sensor went bad the year prior.

This just happened to me on 2021 Ram 3500 on Christmas Day, driving along regen started then bam says it’s 100% see dealer I’ve been trying to force a regen with Alfa OBD but no avail
This sounds like a sensor or software issue?
I’m at 38k on miles I can’t believe filter is already plugged
