2500 vs 3500

Maybe a silly question; but I don't think I've ever had to give the weight of my vehicle for registration in Texas, is this standard in other states?

We only have to identify if the vehicle is personal/commercial/agriculture use, then pay the $55ish dollar fee.

You live in a normal state.. we live in Communist CA lol.

And our registration is stupid expensive. Even for my wife’s 4Runner it’s $556 dollars a year.

Personally for me i had a 3500 DRW it was great my 19 2500 handles weight way past what the gvwr is i have been toying with the idea of a 3500 srw only for the HO cummins and the legal payload numbers

Dang. $51 per year for my tag and that’s only because I have an Appalachian Trail conservancy tag that has a $25 donation on top of the $26 fee. Oh and is smog exempt due to weight (>8500gvwr)

I can be anywhere from 265$/yr to 500$/yr depending what i register my trucks max weight at anything higher you need to go commercial with a CVOR and when pulled over they only care about registered weight not trucks gvwr thankfully lol

You're in Canada right? in AB my truck and my wife's Infinity SUV are the same price to register, don't remember how much but under a $100
How come you are being charged variable rates of some sort??

Identify... I like it! Since CA guys literally live in the state that created this "identify" nonsense, all they've got to do is say their RAM identifies as Prius! That might work. :D

Im in Onterible, and believe it or not they have different registration prices for northern ont vs southern ont for passenger vehicles…. Under 3000kg is 60$/yr in northern ONT or 120$/yr in southern ONT
Then 3000-4500kg is 265$/yr for both regions and after 4500kg the price increases as the weight goes up and at 6500kg (max personal registration) it is 526$/yr……

They sure getcha on your property taxes through don't they?
Ohhhhhhh, yes they do...

Wish Ram would offer 10,800lb GVWR on 2500 like Ford does on their F-250. They may not do it being worried it would eat into sales of 3500s.

GM offers an 11,300 GVWR 2500.

Stopped by Ford dealer today. They had 5 F-250s with the 6.7L diesel just come in last few days. All have GVWR 10,800 option.

Payloads: Lariat with the Tremor off road pkg at 2777. A loaded Platinum was 2808. Regular Lariats at 2819.

The axle ratings are 5200/6340. 500lbs Less than the Ram 2500s at 6000/6040
If Ram 2500 had 2800 payload, I’d be all over that.

Also, stopped by Ram dealer to test drive a 3500 HO MC with air suspension. Didn’t get much seat time but the lighter leaf pack does make the ride pretty nice for a 1 ton. Definitely felt better than my 2006 2500 MC 2WD. Everything so much better damped in the suspension, body mounts, vibration cancellation, etc. It was nice. Bet that 2500 air suspension is even nicer. Keep tying to find one of those to drive.

Edit: The 3500 was a Limited with a payload was just over 3600lbs

Mine (CCLB) is 3707lbs without a sunroof.

This Limited was sans sunroof but had RamBox so likely the difference there.

I have a hunch that once Ram goes 5th gen in the HDs, then, just maybe, they'll offer alternate/higher GVWR for the 2500s to match Ford and GM. I think if they did that with the factory air suspension, that would be a great combo. Match Ford and GM on payload but have a much smoother ride with the bags.
