2500 GVWR Fudge Factor

That is completely subjective. How do you measure "does it best"?

I also have a '99-- I would rather tow my 14k lb 5er with my '99 than the 2016 coil spring truck I sold.
It is subjective and an opinion.

I know my 4th Gen stops better. Turns better. Rides better. And reacts better. And hauls a family of 5 better.

My 99 has a NV4500 and I much rather shift my own gears.

The 3rd Gen stops better than the 2nd...but that is about it.

It was my opinion. And now I gave you my thoughts.

The only thing my 2016 did better than my 99 was pull the load (power/torque). My 99 stops just as good and handles better loaded. 99 has pacbrake so stopping is not a problem.

2016 coil truck felt like the titanic crossing the ocean blue whenever I tried to make a turn hauling our 5er... very unsettling. And that was with helper air springs, too.

We also had a 2006 3rd gen that I miss dearly. That truck had big balls and handled fantastic. 48re was trouble free as well. Some day I'll buy another.

Different strokes for different folks.

My 99 has the most torque. 450 lb ft with the 488 Cu in Magnum.

The 3rd Gen...i do not really like anything about it. The 5.7 Hemi and the auto trans are just annoying really. The cab was more comfortable for the kids though.

The 15 works so well. I have never understood the need for helper anything. Maybe your air springs were actually hindering you?

My 99 stopping is comical compared to the 4th Gen. But I usually downshift the NV4500 vs braking anyways. But I have had to panic stop all 3 because of deer...the 99 is a handful the 03 is more controlled...the 4th Gen just comes to a stop... no drama.

I have driven them back to back hauling our camper. The 99 is the most fun. I can skip the 3rd Gen and the 4th just makes me feel safer with the family.

I also had a 2013 4th Gen with leaf springs and the Cummins.

Still like the 15 more.

Great fleet of trucks! Mine are/were all diesels. I cannot comment on any of the gas offerings, unfortunately. My 99 is also an nv4500 truck, but the 24v has 75+ injectors, 4" exhaust, and a quadzilla. That truck moves out just fine! Next on the list for her is a 4th gen steering upgrade... ive read lots of good reviews on that mod for 2nd gens.

I put the 4th gen steering on my 3rd gen and it made a world of difference. Tying those two front wheels together makes it happen and helps reduce the likelihood of deathwobble. I don't know what they were thinking when they put that Y steering on there.

Anyone ever thought about re- rate the truck? I was looking in an increase above the 10k for registration reasons but I had no luck.
Contacted several dealers and even RAM, nobody was able to help.
If the 10k is artificial, shouldn't it be easy for Ram to change it, same as all the GM 3/4 tons have 11k GVWR?
I've read somewhere that Ford has a whole department for just re- rating trucks, most was downrate for license and maybe cost reasons.
In my state 1 lbs above 10k would save me 400$ a year in tabs.

It's an interesting question.

The F250 can be optioned with either 10k gvwr or 10,800 gvwr so... there's that. It appears Ford has not applied an arbitrary 10k GVWR to their 3/4 ton trucks.

I was in contact with a coach builder who can legally change the payload rating but the cost way out weighed the benefit especially since they go by axleweights here not payload

My friend’a 2018 CCSB Cummins stickers are below. There were some years (mid to late 20-teens?) where the rear axle rating went UP but it’s been brought back down, I think starting with the 4.5 gen in 2019. Go figure...

GAWR front = 6000
GAWR rear = 6500
GVWR = 10k
