2500 4x4 towing

I'm just going to point out that while you may not "need 4wd", you will find 4-lo to be super helpful when spotting your trailer
With a manual trans sure, not with an automatic

I’d buy a different hitch if they are that fragile.
Unfortunately it is too late, I am into this one for $1200.00.

That is the strange part, this hitch is very beefy and solid, not sure what the deal is.

If you ever park on the downside of a grassy knoll with the front down, you’ll be glad you have 4 WD. I have gotten stuck in my yard on wet grass numerous times. Also got stuck in gravel with trailer leaning one way and truck another. Put it in 4wd and idled out.

Gear reduction is gear reduction, I've used 4-lo many times backing a trailer in a tight spot with an automatic.
I am well aware of the gear reduction but unless in slick conditions or terrible inclines there is still not much need for 4Lo if you have good throttle control even with tight spots. Causing binding in the drive train with 4LO is not my go too method of backing in a trailer now if you had something like the BD 2wd LO kit then that would be good.

Wait is this a WDH thread or a thread about using 4Lo with a trailer?

WDH - belongs in the garbage

4Lo off pavement - anytime you want
4Lo on pavement - only straight backing up*

*If you’re towing on ice may the towing gods be with you

Towing on ice is not so bad lol but yea unless you have a 1/2 ton or way out of wack trailer a WDH is not worth it

I use a WDH on mine pulling a 7K TT. I could get by without it and have pulled it some without the bars but with the WDH I don’t have to worry about how it’s loaded. I pulled it this last April across I 40 in Texas with wind gusts up to 60 mph hitting us dead in the side. Tried to run atleast 60 mph so we weren’t holding up traffic too bad. Was glad I had everything I could have to help. Would not have even tried it without the WDH.

Having towed with an without the WDH on the same trailers, that are properly loaded, a WDH is certainly not needed on these trucks but it sure does reduce driver fatigue with an improved ride, especially on rough and/or dirt roads.

WD has its place for sure. Some of you may have the perfect setup that doesn’t require it. Others don’t or they are asking a bit much of their coil sprung big trucks. Most WD setups, with friction bars of course have built in sway control. Less porpoising is another benefit some experience.

Now taking the bars off for any backing up…..yeah no. I jackknifed and parked that camper in some places and yes they made noise but they always worked and nothing broke.

I’ve never taken my bars off on the Equalizer hitch I have either.

That’s what I ran. I fitted that to a Bulletproof hitch and their WD adapter. Tailgate opened with out hitting or turning the jack. It was a great setup.

I’ve had mine on 3 different trucks and each one has to be set up a little differently but easy to do with an impact wrench. Used new bolts and nuts each time.

Over 10K miles on my Equalizer hitch and counting. No problems so far.

Equal-I-Zer is not one of the brands that requires disconnecting the bars for reverse. They also rate the head the same with or without the bars attached.

It's a great WDH.

Not really expensive like some and easy to configure.

I am using Weigh Safe WDH. When it talked to them they were very adamant about not backing up with the spring bars connected. I asked “what if I need to back up to maneuver into a gas station pump” and they said I would have to get out and disconnect the spring bars. Not doing so could damage the hitch.

ROFL, what idiot were you talking to there?

Spring bar hitches do NOT need to be disconnected to back up unless perhaps you're prone to jackknifing the trailer, even then you're just as likely to slip out a bar as damage anything.

Used 4-Lo on pavement to back my trailer in a tight spot last week.

Well, technically it was 2-Lo. :-)
