Good morning,
I have posted a few times on this issue I'm having with my 23' big horn Cummins motor. The truck has been at the dealer here in CO for 9 weeks with very little information. According to the dealer they state there are confidentially laws between Mopar and Cummins and cannot disclose the information on repairs. Truck went it with a minor ticking with 7,300k on it but the ticking would go away when warm. I have also been in person multiple times with no additional info. Monday of last week they told me it will need a new small block,Friday the dealer stated the new motor arrived and will be installing. Does getting a new small block essentially mean I'm getting a "new motor?" Dealer will also not say how long this install will take. Thoughts and feedback are appreciated.

Thank you, Palomba

Did they say "small block" or **"short block"? These terms refer to different aspects of automobile engines, and it's important to clarify the difference.

  • Small block and big block typically describe V-8 engines, especially in older models. The distinction is based on engine size and displacement: small block engines are generally under 360 cubic inches of displacement (c.i.d.), while big block engines are over 360 c.i.d. These terms refer to the physical size and design of the engine.
  • A short block, on the other hand, refers to an engine that comes partially assembled, with key components like the engine block, rotating assembly (crankshaft), and pistons already installed.
  • A long block includes everything a short block has but also comes with the cylinder heads installed, making it closer to a complete engine, although it typically lacks components like the intake manifold and electronics.

My apologies. This is the text message from the dealer. “Star approved/placed an order for a short block.”

I didn't think Ram/Cummins did short block replacements, more likely a long block with the head already installed.
They do, had mine replaced. Short block even though the tech and the dealer specifically pushed for a long block. Thankfully all seems quite good thus far but fingers still crossed.

Informative explanation!
