I know it’s early, but has anyone begun evaluating the feasibility of swapping a 2023 steering wheel into a 2022 and prior yet?

@Jimmy07

I'm getting a new steering wheel under warranty but would be looking into this as well if I wasn't
Based on this thread im not sure it will work. Looks like they use different configurations.

I saw that too. The signal may be different however not sure if it is the wheel itself or the BCM that is causing the difference
Multiple things: definitely need the 2023 steering column control module along with the new switches. Once all the wiring on the SCCM is rearranged, missing wires added, the BCM might be able to be configured for them, or they might not operate the cluster.

Most likely too much work for an average DIY'er then. Still would love to see it happen

Coming from a 22 to a 23, I honestly preferred the old wheel. The new buttons feel cheap.

I’m surprised Ram changed so much just to commonize the steering wheel buttons with the 1500.

I am in the middle of this swap (2021 to 2022) right now! It’s not easy! Pictures are coming but here is what I have found and done so far!

I recently bought a 2021 Ram. Coming from too many Toyotas to mention! Thinking it was just a bolt on, I bought a 2022 steering wheel because I wanted leather, and I liked the layout of the up and down button! After purchasing the 2022 wheel, I discovered that the 2021 did NOT have volume control buttons in it! What was Ram thinking!! Luckily I discovered that the 2022 had volume controls built in, an added bonus that I didn’t even know about! On the 2021 Ram placed the buttons in 2 vertical rows, very unintuitively to say the least! For 2022, the buttons are in a 4 way configuration with the “enter/ok” button in the center, a very intuitive arrangement!

Here is what I’ve done and found out so far.
1) the 2021 has a large cut out for the clock spring, so I had to modify the 2022 steering wheel frame to fit over the clock spring, more on this later,
2) the clock spring turn signal cancellation mechanism is not the same. The 2022 uses tabs forged into the back side of the steering wheel frame, the 2021 uses a slot molded into the frame, coupled with a round tab mounted on the clock spring. I measured the size of the round tab and drilled out the 2022 frame to accommodate the tab,
2) the 2022 splines are slightly smaller, although it looks the same it required much persuasion with a brass ouch and a BFH, normally I don’t believe in forcing anything in but I didn’t want to use the mounting bolt to pull the wheel onto the splines because I was afraid that it might’ve snapped off with the force of an impact gun. The brass punch worked fine and didn’t require too much force.
3 with ALL of that done and the steering wheel mounted, I discovered that the airbag would NOT mount due to the weight added to the mounting bolt (in the 6:00 position), I simply removed the weight.
4 finally I discovered that the steering wheel harness plug will NOT plug into the Clock spring! As 2022 Clock Springs are different and used ones start at $200 and new are over $400, I stopped here, but completed the assembly process so I can drive My truck for work, today, I will post pics later, and let you know how I resolve the plug situation. I don’t even know if I will need to let the BCM what’s going on or if it will work once the plug situation is resolved!

Stay tuned for more!

It sounds like you’re trying to stuff a 5th gen 1500 steering wheel into a 2500/3500 HD Ram. Even after you somehow get it mounted, and rewired, it’s ultimately not going to work. The steering wheel button messages over lin bus are completely different.

Hmm sounds about right, Jimmy, but I want to see for myself, I will report back!

Isn’t the steering column spline count different between 1500 and HD?

Talk about an effort in futility… what a way to intentionally damage a 2 year old truck. smh

Ok guys so here’s the update: Bottom line is the electronic switches are not compatible (Jimmy knows his stuff!!) and when connected the wipers cannot be turned off, the turn signal switch doesn’t work, and that is as far as I tested it. The steering shaft on the vehicle is extremely hardened and No damage to the splines occurred . FYI the 2022 Ram 1500 Steering Wheel was from a salvage yard and already had areas on the spline where the splines looked shaved, so Only a little coaxing was all that it needed to go on. From the looks of the two mating surfaces I couldn’t see a spline difference. I took the switches completely apart and the electronic circuit boards on the 2022 1500 are much more complicated with additional integrated circuits on board. The shape of the switches makes it impossible to swap the switches. The way that I tested the switches was to cut the plug off from the 2500 steering wheel and solder it to the plug on the 1500 switch harness so that it would plug into the clock spring. Also the drilled hole in the 1500 steering wheel Did operate the turn signal self canceling correctly, and the leather 1500 wheel was a huge improvement in comfort over the plastic 2500 Base model wheel. In the end, I switched everything back and I’m at square one!

Something to note, the Airbag on the 2021 2500 and the 2022 1500 mount Exactly the same way. In order to put the airbag back on, you must use a screwdriver to push the spring inwards. There is a slot inside of the spring area and when you push the spring in, it will automatically enter that slot. This is a MUST do otherwise you will struggle and be Unable to reinstall the Airbag. Once the springs are in that slot, you simply push the Airbag on and it clicks into place with almost Zero effort!

How about some pictures?
