Here's a good one. I have a 2022 Ram 3500 with the diesel and recently had a very unwelcome experience at just under 31k miles. I had the engine shutdown while driving and the truck came to a sudden stop, as though someone stepped on the brakes.

I had been on the interstate driving around 70mph and decided to make a detour. I got off, turned on a secondary road and maybe made it 3/4 of a mile before the truck died and came to a sudden stop. The engine died without any warning, had no warnings on the dash, and truck felt like someone stepped on the brakes. There were no abnormal noises when this happened or warnings on the dash. I'm glad I was only going around 30-40mph, as I didn't even have time to get out of the lane of travel. This might have had a different outcome if I stayed on the interstate. I attempted to restart the truck, but the engine didn't turn over and all the electronics went dead, then came back. I put a jumper box on the truck and had the same result. With the electronics freaking out from the lack of voltage from the starter failing to turn over the engine, the truck wouldn't let me take it out of park to roll it out of the live lane of traffic. It was towed to the dealer by the wrecker service on call as the cop, who stopped to assist and was very nice, wanted me out of the live lane. And it was about 5pm when traffic was probably at its heaviest. At no time was there anything leaking from the truck or any evidence of that happening.

The service advisor spoke with me the next morning and informed me it was only showing several codes related to low voltage, nothing else. I was then contacted again later in the day and they confirmed the tech looked at it and tried to bar the engine over on the crank and it appears locked up. I'm waiting on more updates.

Based on what they have said of the engine being locked up and showing no codes, it fits what I experienced. No warning of an issue, and a rapid stop as though the brakes were stepped on.

Any speculation on what could have caused the engine to lock up and not display any warnings, either codes or funny noises? Emissions issues are a constant worry, and I figured those would crop up at some point in time, but a failure like this never crossed my mind. I figured with all the electronics these trucks have now days, you would have had some sort of warning before this type of failure.

I'm tagging @RamCares and hope with will follow up with me on this bizarre failure.

So, for the obvious question: when was the last time you checked your oil?

About 450 miles ago the night before. It was 1/4" below the top of the safe zone.

I was told the tech also checked the oil and it appeared fine.

Brutal, I didn't realize it was that easy but it's good to know for the future. The truck did allow itself to be shifted out of park when the tow arrived, but the computers had a few minutes to settle down.

It still wouldn't crank when it was dropped at the dealer and the computers freaked out again when it was tried.

Grid heater bolt failure?

That could have been so much worse, towing on an interstate, etc. Glad your okay.

Not sure, but I wouldn't expect that failure to cause the engine to lock up with no warning. I would expect that to trip some codes, possibly kill a cylinder, and have a poor running engine, but not lock up the engine.

very curious to know what caused this!
