2022 Mega 3500, Loud droning noise on highway

Please keep us informed with dealer feedback! From what I can gather, the only chance of a fix is an amp replacement and/or uconnect 5 updated (more likely). Update not scheduled for release until end of March!!! No doubt “RamCares”…..

I went to the dealer yesterday. The tech drove around with me and could hear the problem. They said they had never heard of the issue and saw nothing in FCA’s system, which surprised me. Regardless, they ordered a new amp. The amp is on backorder, which the tech said may be an indicator there is a more widespread issue.

Yep, the same here. Back order.

noise cancelling system working very well, self adjusting air bags and buttery smooth 48rfe trans making this 3500 the sweetest 1 ton ever . I hate to think it could turn into a annoying bitch i will be watching this closely

I just purchased a 2022 Power Wagon 2 weeks ago. This will be my third Power Wagon. First one with Harman/Kardon system and I believe I have this same issue. At speeds over 80 there is a very loud drone that starts. Let off the throttle and it calms down. Neither my 2019 or 2020 Power Wagon did this. There are also several faint pops from the speakers when starting up and turning off the truck. Hopefully a software update can fix this instead of having to replace the amp on a brand new truck.

I have a “base model” Laramie on order. It doesn’t even have Level 1 equipment. It’s probably more like a Big Horn with the Laramie interior. Is it safe to assume that I won’t have the ANC issue?

If an amp does need to be replaced, where is it in the truck and is it a fairly easy fix?

While I am waiting on a new amp from Ram, I thought I would try the ANC bypass harness from LLJ Customs. This harness takes the microphones out of the ANC system and is supposed to keep the system from generating the unwanted noises. The harness did not work. It may work on other models with the Alpine sound system, but not the 2022 2500 with the Harman Kardon sound system.

I called the dealer yesterday and they said there are no new amps in the country and the expected date is March 2nd. She also said not to count on it being here by then.

Rocky, I have the bypass harness with the Harman kardon premium system and does work with mine; the harness decouples the microphones to the amp. You’ll probably want to pull the fuse to the amp to verify the noise you’re concerned with is in fact the ANC. You could also just pull the harness from the amp.

If you pull the harness from the amp, does that disable the radio also - like pulling the fuse does?

Also, where is the amp? I assume there is a plug that one just unplugs from it?

Removing the harness will kill the radio similar to the fuse removal ensuring the speakers are completely disabled. The amp is under the driver side dash on the left of the steering shaft.

Thanks Erik. I pulled the fuse and it’s quiet as can be. The sound is different with the bypass harness but still there. I even get a rhythmic sound in the interstate that is 4 seconds on/2seconds off. When I pull the fuse I get no rumbling, droning, or rhythmic sound. I’m hoping the new amp fixes it.

With the amount of faulty amplifiers that are coming to light, does it make sense that Stellantis/Chrysler should push out a recall or at least a TSB concerning the obnoxious ANC defect?

Explains why I have not heard a peep from my dealer.

2022 3500 Longhorn mega cab low frequency cabin noise - I have the same low frequency (and inconsistent) droning noise that goes away when the windows are rolled down.
I cycled the surround sound in settings on/off and it appears to have gone away. I’ve only just done this so we’ll see tomorrow if it’s really resolved …?

There is no 48rfe there is the 48RE used in the 5.9 3rd gens or the 68RFE used in the SO cummins since 07.5

Immediately upon starting up, I get a low noise thump, thump, thump. Sounds like a distant artillery barrage. It is a deep base thump coming from the subwoofer and speakers (17 speaker HK). The weird part is that if you open a door or window, it instantly goes away. The ANC seems to be cutting in/out. Most of the aggrevation is at low speeds below 45 MPH. Less problems at highway speeds, but I still hear the ANC struggling and cutting in and out. At this point, I would disable the ANC if I could as it is very annoying.

That all describes what is happening with my 2021. It seems to have started at about 3,000 miles as I never noticed it from day one as others have. It is a bit erratic but very annoying. Sometimes it does it, other times not. But describing it as a distant artillery barrage is spot on for what I have. Too bad there is no way to disable the ANC without disabling the radio. Today I tried just muting the radio to see if that would stop it. I did not hear it after I did that, but I was only about 1/4 mile from home at the time so not a good enough test yet. I don't really understand how ANC works and why there would even be a thumping sound.

Anyone know how it senses a window down so it turns ANC off? I assume it is not just the wind noise of opening the window that does it, but that the ANC senses the opened window electronically somehow? If simply cracking a window 1/4" kills it, I might try cracking the rear passenger side and then covering it with something to keep the cold and wind noise out.

Oh, and does anyone know if cracking the rear slider window turns it off or if it is only the 4 side windows? I will try that next time I drive the truck to see. If the rear slider opened 1/2 inch turns it off, that would be the easiest solution for now I guess.

You can de pin the mic positive wires from the amp connector

Didn’t work…

The owners manual says the ANC turns off when you roll down one or more windows. I have not seen it read anything regarding the impact of surround sound.
