So I just brought my '22 2500 Diesel into the dealership for an alignment after installing a Thuren suspension kit and 37" tires. The dealer called me back to tell me that the truck's front wheel bearings were shot - and dangerously so. The vehicle only has 7000 total miles on it.

The service adviser says he needs to clear the replacement with FCA, and i really hope they aren't going to try to deny the warranty claim over leveling kit and big tires. I can't think of any way these mods could cause such premature failure - during the installation, you don't touch the hubs at all, only lower the axle as a unit.

Has anyone seen this issue before? If you have, what was the root cause? My current theory is they forgot to pack grease at the factory or something. Maybe this will explain why I have been getting such poor fuel economy since day 1 in this truck...

Stock wheels or are they spaced out?
If the stock wheels you may be fine for warranty otherwise you most likely will be paying…
same 17" method's most other people are running on their Carli/thuren trucks. I am assuming if these caused such early failure often, there would be others on here complaining loudly

Is it one or both bearings? If its just one id chalk it up as a fluke but if both something is funky

Well I got ahold of CJC offroad and they said they have seen quite a few defective hub assemblies on 2022 trucks. Will see if the dealer takes this, but apparently it's been happening even on stock trucks

come to think of it there was some noise, but I had attriubted it to the tires. Wouldn't have suspected worn hubs on a new truck

For any other 2022s reading this thread it looks like his truck was assembled around 10-25-21. Mine was assembled on 10-19-21, I recently hit 1k miles but will be paying close attention to how the steering feels. Can you post what your truck was doing that alerted you something was off?

So nothing that really alerted me. I did start noticing more noise while rolling, which in hindsight was bearing noise, but I had just attributed it to the 37" offroad tires. Maybe I'm an idiot but I wouldn't have suspected bearings on a vehicle this new.

When I took it in for an alignment, the mechanic said there was an incredible amount of play in the bearings and it was unsafe to drive.

Turns out the warranty will be covering this, problem is there may be a back order on parts. Will update Tomorrow. In the meantime maybe pick up your front axle with a jack and shake tires to check bearing play, if your truck was built on a day close to mine

If they are back ordered im sure its not just your truck

To update, seems like they found the parts and are saying it will be ready to pick up tomorrow, as far as warranty interactions go, this hasn't been that bad!
Did they mention the mods at all?

Ya - they said they've installed leveling kit +37's on quite a few trucks with no issues, so mods are very unlikely to be the cause

That's a good dealer, alot of these dealers would have u to pay..

Bump - if your truck was built around 10/25, jack up the axle and check the bearings. After having this repair done, the truck just feels so much better, but could be placebo. The ride seems more composed and less "wobbly", the truck stays in gear when accelerating on the highway unloaded, and feels generally quicker. honestly feels like i was previously hauling alot of weight and just removed it. I gained about 1.5mpg on the dash meter - I've driven 1500 miles since the repair so i think that effect is real. Based on what i was told, my bearings were totally smoked, like well past where they would fail inspection. I never noticed the hubs getting hot, but then again, I never checked - it's a new truck

I am honestly amazed that if there was that much play in the bearings there weren't ABS warning lights and issues. Usually those follow loose hubs.

Please lube your hubs fellas. They'll literally last forever unless defective like the OP's. Pull the ABS sensor and force grease in there when nearly new and then every 75-100k. You can feel the bearings loading up with fresh lube while spinning when adding grease.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet, OP. Glad to hear they are covering it.
