2022 Aisin Failure Tracking Sheet

FIFY

Hemi C&C get the AS66RC. :)
Hemi C&C 3500’s get the 8HP75 as standard and have the option to upgrade to the AS66RC

Hemi C&C 4500 / 5500’s get the AS66RC as standard.

It’s important to note that both Aisin transmissions, the AS69RC for diesels and the AS66RC for Hemi’s, are susceptible to the K1 snap ring failure in model year 2022, as are some early production 2023’s

The tracking sheet is up and running. Please share. If you are on the list, please make sure your data is correct. If not, I can update. Also, if someone is not on there and would like to contribute I can add. Public has viewing and commenting rights only. Thanks!

I just had my 2022 3500HD DRW. HO motor Laramie fail towing my stacker. 5500 miles. Same issue, dealer told me 90-120 days for replacement of parts so this falls into lemon territory and pushing for a buy back of my truck. So pissed. GMC guy for 25 years made the switch to Ram and only lasted me a month.

Here is my VIN # 3C63RRJL8NG400639. purchased in May of 23'

Has anyone been able to get RAM to preemptively replace the problem - or is everyone just sitting on a potential disaster. I just purchased my 2022, upgraded from a 2019 2500 because I purchased a new and larger RV and was up against and over payload. Now I feel like I am supposed to travel this summer with a truck that is less safe than the one I just traded in. Sorry for venting, but are there options?

I have it in good authority that the issue started at Aisin. It wasn’t an assembly error but rather a batch of snap rings that were out of spec. Somehow made it past quality control. They fail internally and fall out of position on the K1 drum. When this happens you lose 1-4 gears instantly.

They initially were rectifying the failed transmissions by installing completely new transmissions but that was suspended starting around 1/11/23 when they released the TSB (21-002-23) for this particular issue. There have been numerous cases where trucks that received replacement transmissions suffered another failure of the same type and are subsequently out of service again. The current method to address the issue is ordering a “parts kit” that includes all necessary components to fix the failed transmissions. Some of the parts in the kit are on extended backorder causing significant delays.

If you would like, I can add your truck to the tracking spreadsheet I have going. There are currently 132 trucks on there with confirmed K1 failures.
Have any of the 2023s been affected/

Some early 2023 build dates have been effected

Not sure where your data is from. Just reviewed the spreadsheet and don’t see 2023 build dates though there are a couple delivery dates. Am I missing something or do have another data point? Thanks.

Dropped my Truck off today at the Dealer. A Friend of mine is Wholesale parts manager, he says he has the K-1 kit in stock, but there is like 2 pages of potential other parts, that may be needed. I should know by tomorrow the extent of damage.

I am aware of at least one 2023 that failed. It’s on the spreadsheet (Row #205)

It was a cab and chassis truck. Date of manufacture was 12-22 so it was built in December of 2022, and it had an Aisin transmission manufactured early December 2022.

See Row 205 on my spreadsheet. That is a 2023 cab and chassis with a confirmed K1 failure.

I can get you on the spreadsheet. If you’re able please send me as much of the following for data points on my spreadsheet:

1. Date you ordered the truck (if applicable)

2. Date of manufacture (See sticker on driver door for "date of manufacture (Build date))

3. Date you purchased the truck

4. Mileage on odometer at the time of failure

5. Serial Number of failed transmission (see blue stamped metal tag on side of the transmission. It will be something like "2H-2345"

6. Serial Number of replacement transmission (if applicable)

7. Were you towing at the time of failure?

8. Did 1st through 4th gear work?

9. Did reverse work?

10. What date did the transmission fail?

11. When was the truck returned to you after repair?

12. Did your dealer replace the transmission with a new unit or was the failed transmission repaired with parts?

If you don’t have some of this info now, that’s fine. Please update me as you go through the process

Initially they were shipping the parts individually but that changed at some point. They’re now shipping it as a “clutch kit” which is basically the entire K1 unit already pre-assembled at the factory and ready to drop-in. There are some other parts they can order if they’re damaged. Seems like the trucks that were forced to continue moving (in limp mode on 5th gear only) after the K1 failed are usually the ones in need of “extra” parts. (Makes total sense considering all the loose items in there spinning around after failure). The trucks that stopped moving and were immediately shut down and hauled to a dealer usually only need the clutch kit.

At least that’s my assessment based on 240 failures

Mine just went last week. Failed 6/14. Ordered 7/1/22, delivered 11/23/22, 5500/Cummins. 3800 miles at failure. Reverse worked, didn't try 5th, got it towed to dealer. They said today that they haven't gotten to it yet and there are a couple of other trucks with transmission issues ahead of me. I was NOT towing, it failed when I was backing out of a parking spot. Put it into drive and there was a clunk, no forward gears. When I get back next week I will get the other info you need, and keep you updated.

Oh and I just had LiquidSpring suspension done. I do NOT want to deal with a buyback. Crap crap crap crap crap.

Sorry to hear about this. I’ll get you on the spreadsheet. Shoot me a PM or reply to this with the rest of the info when you get it, and please keep me updated as you go through this. It does seem like the repair times are improving some in most cases.

Whelp, Kolor me K-ring Kaput, but I'm glad it happened when and where it happened.

A little back story: On April 21st I hitched the 12k 5th wheel to the '22 3500 and headed out across the country, K-ring be damned. I went from coast to coast and back again without a single problem. In fact, the truck performed superbly and exceeded my expectations.

Last Friday I slid the truck camper into the bed and headed over to the left coast for a long Father's Day weekend with friends, about a 5 hour drive. The last 40 miles or so before my destination is a steep and winding northern California coastal mountain road named Hwy 20. Things were great until about 2 miles from the town of Fort Bragg, CA when all of a sudden my dash lit up like a Christmas tree, which to me indicated that the snap ring went, or was about to go, "SPROING!" It happened on a flat straight stretch and I immediately whipped it over to a nice, safe wide spot. Before I got the truck all settled down and put in Park I heard a big "CLANG" from about where the transmission sits and felt the truck shudder. Based on everything I've read here it fit with the K1 snap ring failure and, not wanting to potentially further damage the transmission, I did not try to engage any forward or reverse gears.

Fortunately, there is a very reputable Chrysler dealership in Fort Bragg (Sport Chrysler Jeep) and AAA had me hooked up and towed to the lot in about 45 minutes. As of yesterday afternoon they had it partially torn down and so far it looks like it's just the snap ring with no other damage. No word yet on parts availability, but they just did a K-ring repair a couple of weeks ago and the parts were readily available then. They hooked me up with a rental car and I'm just waiting for good news at home. I'll let you know when I'm back on the road after I give it a good workout returning over that same grade under the same circumstances.

Well…I guess if it’s going to happen, that’s about as “good as it gets”. Glad it wasn’t on some lonely stretch of desert highway. I appreciate the info, I’ll get you on the sheet. Please keep me updated as you can. Yet another September truck to add to the list….

Yes, we have the 35 ft 5th wheel stuck in a walmart parking lot. trying to figure out what to do and who to call. RAM will tow the truck, but we have to ge tthe 5er towed, but dont know where to.
On a side note, I noticed that the truck was less responsive a few days ago. I called ram care and reported it. I dod not feel safe crossing two lanes of traffic due to acceleration lag. Now im thinking it was the trans. it through the P0731, and 0733 code.

Where do you need to get it to?

I'm down in Parker and if you're in a bind for a semi-local move, I can help.
