2022 Aisin Failure Tracking Sheet

I contacted

I contacted Ram roadside service. Tow truck arrived in about two hours towed to dealership on day of failure.
Okay let us know what they’re able to tell you. Hopefully they have a grasp on things. You are the 182nd truck I’ve added to the spreadsheet since 1/10/23. You’re on there as of now. Please keep me updated as you are able. I appreciate your info and I hope this goes smoothly and quickly for you.

I got word this past Thursday that my truck was repaired. Number 109 on the spreadsheet. 56 day from breakdown. Now just waiting on Ram care to transport truck back to me. Trucks in Atlanta, and I'm in Cincinnati. seems to be another slow process. Ram care is paying the bill to have truck transported. Was told it will ship to the closest CDJR dealer to me. Still waiting on reimburments from ram care for other exspenses. FCA towing service charged me addition $380 for both my truck and trailer to be towed because of mileage to dealer. They said there were 2 closer Ram dealers truck could've been towed to. The closest dealer would not take truck because I wasn't an exsiting customer and they wern't accepting new customers, and the second said they were unable to work on HD trucks. Also trying to recoup fuel costs for having someone come down from Cincinnati and get me and trailer and haul home. I was told by my case manager that Ram care would reimburse rental cost for 1 ton truck. I asked my case manager repeatedly to please email me the duration and amount per day they would cover and never got a response. Luckily I have had access to other vehicles in my fleet throughout the last 2 months, though not as comfortable or capable.

I will mark you as repaired on the spreadsheet. I`m assuming your truck got the "TSB repair" and not a complete transmission swap correct? Also, I am still missing the build date for your truck, as well as the transmission serial number. When you get the truck back in your possession, I would appreciate it if you could update that data with me. Also, let me know if anything changes when you get the truck back. Hopefully all will be well. Thanks again for the updates!

I see on the spreadsheet that most of the transmission failures are 2022 models, but see that there are a couple of 2021's. Is there any more info on 2021 failures?

All of the failures listed on the sheet are 2022 model year trucks with the exception of one. If you see a manufactured date with a “21” as the year, those are early-built 2022’s.

The one truck on the sheet that is not a 2022 was a 2020 model year that received a brand new Aisin transmission as a result of an unrelated failure. The transmission it received was a new, off the shelf Aisin that was manufactured in 2022 and contained the same flawed parts as all of the other trucks. I have that Truck highlighted in yellow and have it noted as such on the sheet.

Thanks for the info. I have a 2023 RV on order but it has a 2021 (June built) 5500 cab chassis. The dealer can't release it to me until the heater grid recall is done, but 2021 hasn't been released yet. There are several 2023 (same RV) that is being shipped to dealers right now with the 2022 transmissions, and I can elect to stick with my original order, or the newer one with a 2022 chassis/transmission.

You’re likely going to be waiting a while for the grid heater relay. 2021’s aren’t slated to be able to get the fix until mid May. My 2022 still hasn’t been fixed, and the dealer still can’t get parts for it.

As for the transmissions, I’m not sure how it works with cab and chassis trucks that are already being upfitted by an RV manufacturer, however inwas told by a dealer that Ram released a revision for TSB 21-002-23 back on March 8th. This revision included an upgrade to an “RSU” (Rapid Service Update). As part of RSU 23-065, dealers were supposedly able to look up VIN numbers for un-sold units that are affected by the TSB and the k1 issue. From what they said, Ram was urging dealers to look up the vins for unsold trucks through DealerCONNECT and then subsequently install the parts from the TSB as a preemptive fix. Not sure how accurate that is, but it would be worth investigating.

I think for RV's it might be a little different than a traditional car dealer. I'm not sure if the chassis manufacturer (RAM) sells directly to the RV manufacturer (outfitter), or if the RV manufacturer still has to buy the chassis from a Ram Dealer.

Eventually it will go from the RV manufacturer, and then sold to an RV Dealer. It seems somewhere in that transition, it creates even more chaos. No one seems to know much about anything on the recalls or TSB's. I do know that the RV manufacturer had several heater recalls done on their 2022 chassis (2023 RV) and are shipping to RV dealers right now. I know the RV manufacturer doesn't have any RAM techs like a traditional car dealer, so they would be dependent on a RAM dealer for any recall or TSB. That's why I'm hesitant on the 2022 chassis right now.

@Widebody the 2021 model year chassis would be, in my opinion, a far less worrisome purchase at this point. You’ll get the same performance as a 2022. The only difference would be the Uconnect software of the radio. 21’s use UC4 and 22’s have the UC5. Mechanically the trucks are the same with the same specs and performance. Won’t have to worry about the possibility of the snap ring failure either. Only downside is the wait. It’s probably going to be a while yet before they get a handle on these grid heater recall repairs. Dealers are only allowed to order one relay every seven days. I’m not sure how that works for a chassis that’s being used for an RV build.

Thanks, I'm thinking down the same line. Waiting after waiting a long time tests one's patience. Hard to believe that's it's this hard to spend $200.000+. RAM needs to have a better process for certain cases in my opinion. RV Dealer and Manufacturer has been great.

@mbarber84 my buddy's '22 is supposed to have the tranny fixed by late May (went down early february). Supposedly the grid heater fix was ordered as well. My '23 had the grid heater fixed at the factory so that was nice. Are you thinking that my February built '23 won't have the tranny issue? I have 700 miles on it so far and am loving it. I actually like the new mirrors better than the old ones.

Based on everything I’m seeing, I do believe they have the 2023’s corrected. I have not had anyone report a 23 failure. It’s still a little early but I think there would be some popping up at this point if this was still a problem. All of the most recent 2022’s that received full new transmissions got ones manufactured in 2023.

Well, that's just wonderful, I hope they can narrow it down to a production range.
I have a 1400 mile round trip planned this summer pulling my 20k 5th wheel, now this is going to be on my mind the whole trip
Agreed, we have a black hills and glacier trip planned. A little nervous now!

New to the forum... just purchased a 2022 3500 w/Aisin, Manf 8/22. Does anyone know if the repair for the transmission will appear on a Carfax report? My other question would be is getting the MOPAR Max extended warranty worth the couple thousand? Thanks

Did you purchase the truck new from dealer inventory (or an order), or was it purchased used?

Purchased used in AZ. Live in CA, drove it back and plan to keep like my 2015 for 5-7years. Truck has 2500 miles on it
I would think a dealer would be able to pull up any service records for that truck and see if it was repaired previously. You could also get the serial number off of the side of the Aisin and I can tell you what date the transmission was manufactured. That would possibly give you a hint if it was replaced, but wouldn’t tell you if it had the repair conducted. At 2,500 miles, and a truck build date of August 2022, your truck is right in the heart of when the majority of the failures have occurred. August, September, and October of 2022 are the most prevalent build dates on my spreadsheet, by far. Did the previous owner or used truck dealer indicate wether there was any service performed? I’m not sure if it would show up on a car fax or not

Nothing other then an oil change. The serial on the transmission is 2H-1119. Just a little concerned having read through this post. My last 2015 Ram w/Aisin was a zero issue combination. I figured this would mirror the longevity of my 15 but now a little worried

That transmission was manufactured in August of 2022, likely in the first half judging by the sequence number. So that would lead me to believe it is the original transmission to the truck. Can’t speak to wether it had the snap ring repair done or not however. The Aisin / HO combination has always been a zero issue, ultra reliable combo and it technically still is. This is a rare and unfortunate exception to an otherwise sterling service record. You made a good choice, just bad luck / timing that was out of your hands. You’re definitely not the only one.
