2022 Aisin Failure Tracking Sheet

Alright, so here’s the latest on my Ram that failed Thursday of last week. They were just able to get it on the lift and diagnose today. Snap ring failed then transmission failed. They are ordering parts to repair which from this thread sounds like a good thing instead of replacing with another tranny that will fail again. He read me a list of parts that they ordered but didn’t write them down. Clutch, snap ring… not a mechanic so he was talking gibberish to me. I did not mention the TSB 21-002-23 over the phone but I will when I go to pick up a loaner later today.
Chances are they already have the TSB and are following its instructions but can’t hurt to check to make sure. They are likely ordering the “TSB parts kit” (I’ll attach a picture below pulled right from the TSB). It seems this is becoming the more preferred method of fixing the issue as we move forward. A word of caution, the parts kit has already been applied to one truck with no success. It is unclear at this point why, but I’m assuming either an installation mistake or something missed during diagnostics. I hope your technician is up to the task. #1. I had the first instance of a non-2022 truck experiencing a K1 snap ring failure. The owner has a 2020 Aisin 3500 that, due to some unrelated transmission related issues, the dealer opted to replace the entire transmission under the 5 / 100 powertrain warranty. The original 2020 transmission was removed and a new unit installed (new AS69RC). The replacement transmission failed after only about 700 miles. Dealer diagnosed the failure as the K1 clutch snap ring issue. Another replacement transmission was ordered and installed (new AS69RC with part number 68498560AB). This subsequently failed after about 810 miles. Same mode of failure and characteristics at the time it failed. The truck is currently down and has been at the dealer since 1/2/23. Currently waiting for its third replacement transmission.

Man, this is discouraging.. got me looking for Fords lol. I finally got my truck back again this week and all seems well but I have not towed with it yet, will be a couple more weeks of break-in until I hook up a trailer. I’m still awaiting confirmation from my case manager that the updated AB part number was specifically meant to address this failure, followed up several times but no word yet. They also approved and mailed my rental reimbursement (F350 @ $85/day for 44 days) but have not confirmed the amount of the check so I’m looking forward to that. Thought I would also post my invoice notes.

@aearles thanks for updating us. I’ll update your truck as back in service on my sheet. What date was it returned to you? I’ve been using the sheet to track the turn-around time on repair. Also, please keep us updated on the reimbursement situation if you can, that seems to be a sticking point for some.

I currently show you on my tracking sheet as:

Transmission failed: 12/12/2022
Transmission replaced: 1/25/2023

With a 44 day downtime.

Is this information incorrect? You have me wondering if I put someone else’s information in your slot. Let me know when you can, thanks. I just want to make sure the information reflected on the sheet is accurate. Thanks!

No, you’ve got it right, sorry for confusion, I was the one that got my truck back and then the driveshaft fell out on the way home. The front passenger side brake line was also cut by the tow truck operator and took another 13 days to get those parts in. So I didn’t actually get to drive it until 2/7.

O

Oh ok that makes sense, I remember that now. Sorry, I`ve talked to about 80 people recently so it`s getting more difficult to keep track. I appreciate the reply. Please let me know if anything new develops with your truck, I hope this will be the end of the issue for you.

Keep monitoring the new updates to this thread, I'm owning a 22 3500 HO, have a few camping trips with my 5th wheel reserved in next few months, this makes me more concerned about the failure on the road. Finger crossed, btw, is there any preventative caution we can ask dealer to apply? Or have to to waiting for an actual failure happens, then go through the warranty process to replace transmission?

Based on all the information I have gathered, there is no way for either you, or your dealer to positively determine whether or not your truck has a flawed transmission. The defective snap ring at the root of this issue is internal, and cannot be inspected without removing and disassembling the entire transmission. I would think either Aisin or Ram, or both, would be able to identify which units are defective by their serial number, but there has been no release of that information. Not to the dealers, nor the public. Of the 84 trucks on my spreadsheet currently, 100% of them have been “fix as they fail”. Transmissions that failed prior to the release of the TSB (on 1/11/23) were full transmission replacements. Once the TSB was released, there seems to be a trend moving towards repairing the defective units rather than replacing them. I have been in communication with pretty much everyone on the sheet, and all of the failures share the same characteristics. Unfortunately there was no sign of an issue prior to the failure. They simply fail without any warning. I wish I could give you more / better information but unfortunately that’s all that has been shared / released. The spreadsheet i made is the best source for info that I know of, and demonstrates the variables associated with the failures. My 2022 3500 aisin (built 10/9/21) has a little over 25,000 miles on it currently and it is still going strong. I operate the truck daily, and just assume it’s fine, but I would be lying if I said I trust it completely. Knowing what I know, I use the truck but am fully aware that it may let me down. There are still a large number of 2022 Aisin trucks out there that are not experiencing any issues. It seems to be the luck of the draw at this point.

The majority of the trucks on your list when were they manufactured if you don’t mind me asking.

Any idea how many Aisin trans there were in 2022? I have a 2022 5500, July 2022 build, at the upfitters now, would like to see a fix to this issue soon.

Thank you for the effort to create and track the failure cases! It gives us much more help with some real data, maybe more proving points than some dealership service. In theory, with p/n, s/n back tracing, RAM may figure out what exact transmission used the faulty part, but that's just some huge effort. Hope they can provide updates to TSB, really don't want my tranny fails after warranty expires.

The total span of build dates I have data for goes from October 2021 through November 2022. That being said, the vast majority of the ones I have build dates for were built between April 22 and November 22, with September and October being the most common. I’m missing build dates for quite a few trucks, as owners have either not updated me or failed to provide complete data. There’s really not enough information to nail down specific build dates. The span is simply too wide. Tracking these by transmission serial numbers would be the better way, but unfortunately that information is difficult to obtain.

I don’t have much info on the cab and chassis trucks, but as for the 3500 pickups, figure around 31,000 as an educated guess.

You are very welcome, it has become quite the labor of love at this point. I started the sheet for my own peace of mind, but it has grown far beyond that initial purpose now. I’m hoping we will get some better information released from Ram to help with the issue. It does seem it is still relatively small when compared to the total number of trucks built, but it is still an issue that needs addressed.

Just got a call from my service rep at my dealer. I let her know about the TSB as my transmission was being replaced. They just got in their 10th Aisin and this is the first that will be repaired with the parts kit which is on order. She’s going to let me know if that in fact repairs the transmission once they get the parts. She says the parts aren’t due to her for about a month…

Wow! I’ll be anxious to see if the parts kit works.
Please keep me updated!

(Also, what date did your truck go back in service?, I’m just cleaning up data on my sheet )

I picked it up January 14th
