I have a 2021 ram 2500 tradesman with towing package. I’m in construction and I’ve been towing a couple of different trailers. All of a sudden the other day my transfer case went to neutral and would not stay in 2 Wheel Dr. The dealership couldn’t find anything wrong reset the computer and it drove fine. Until I hooked up a different trailer and after towing for 30 minutes, the transfer case shifted to neutral in the middle of driving. Any suggestions??

That’s a weird one for sure. I do notice my TC shift lever does move around front to back a lot in stop/go traffic while towing, also hitting big bumps. I wonder if yours while moving is in there tight or maybe bent and the back and forth motion is shifting it inadvertently?

The first time it happened, I was in park with the vehicle running. After I hooked up, the trailer, I took the shifter and it goes to for low goes right back into neutral will not go to 2 Wheel Dr., but it will go to four wheel high. It only has happened twice and it was this last week after hooking up the trailer both times.

The frustrating part is, I had to have it towed to the dealership twice. Because I can’t drive it in that condition, because it will not shift out of first gear. Both times the dealer could not find anything wrong.

Linkage adjustment issue? Is it possible the shifter is out of adjustment and hitting the body or binding causing a shift?

Trans mount good? That used to be the common cause when the trans mount has separated the tq would lift the trans and move the t case lever. Im not sure if these are cable or linkage.

I would have to say no.

I would have to say no. Just for the fact that I cannot get it back into the 2 Wheel Dr. mode. The dealer said they could not duplicate the issue so I can pick the truck back up tomorrow. I guess I’ll have to crawl underneath and take a look around.

i’m pretty sure it’s linkage. I’m gonna take a look at it tomorrow when I get it back from the dealer. I hope the transmission mount is good, the charcoal is 13,000 miles on it and only time I used four-wheel-drive is on a couple of construction sites. ‍♂️

I’m not sure how much t-case experience you have but I’m not sure what you mean you “can’t” get it back in 2wd. If you’ve knocked it into N or it otherwise is shifted to N and you’re not on even pavement with the wheels straight and even tire pressure you could experience a binding feeling and it could require a little effort to shift.

Unless the T-case is broken internally and the shift fork is doing it’s own thing then I believe something is knocking the lever forward (knee, etc) or your lever is hitting something (floorboard, console, etc) which is causing the same effect, shifting the case.

It moves freely from four low, to neutral it will not stay in two wheel and then we will go right to four wheel high

It moves friendly from four low to neutral it will not stay in two wheel and then it’ll go right to four wheel high

Is it still pull back for shifting from 2wd to 4 wheel high? I wonder if something is wrong with the shift rod/fork in the t case
