2020 Ram 2500 / Toy Hauler Matchup

I don't know where you live, but our gas is 40-50 cents more than diesel. We have a Golden Gate gas station that dispenses DEF for $3 a gallon, which is good for 500-700 miles.
I'm just guessing but my mileage with your set-up would be 12-14? I'll find out next week on my trip what I can get pulling 17-18k. I won't argue with you about empty though.
That HEMI is a blast to drive in empty truck and you can't beat that sound!!!!!!!!!!And yes, the $11,000 option was hard to swallow, but I'm sure that I'll get most of that back if I ever sell. (I'm hoping this is my last vehicle)!!!! ;)

i have a 2019 ram 2500 crew cab 4x4 with the 6.4 and 8speed.i pull a 2019 cherokee wolf pack 25 pack 12 with my full dresser harley in it and it does a pretty good job,my fuel mileage is around 7mpg at 65mph.my trailer weighs around 8700 empty so add 950 for the bike.sure a diesel would pull better but for the upfront cost of the diesel engine, the def fluid cost, higher cost of fuel and mine is a daily driver i just couldnt justify it for a truck i'd tow with less than 10 times a year.
Exactly my thinking, I will only pull 8-10 times a year currently so couldn't justify the extra cost. I retire in 11 yrs so I will see how this situation goes and if we start using it more then I might have to do the upgrade.

I'm in west TN where the diesel is .60-1.00 more than gas. For the amount of time I would be towing I just could not justify the extra cost. If we like this set up and start using more then I will save for the difference and possibly trade right before retirement.

i live in Kentucky close to Lexington and our diesel is around.40-.50 higher than gasoline. It would save me about $9 every hundred miles, not counting higher maintenance like more oil and fuel filters and def. I’m sure it would tow better when i am towing and would like to have one but it just wasn’t feasible for me. Who knows someday i might jump on the diesel train

I’m retiring within the next year, but I use my truck as a daily driver and only tow the RV trailer a few times a year. I can’t justify the CTD cost.
When I’m retired I will look at a new truck to pull the boat and RV trailer, might consider a CTD, and maybe a used car to drive to the golf course, etc.
The truck will be my last truck because I won’t be mileing it out.
Two CDTs l owned both had over 500,000 Kms on them when I sold them (they were badly rusted by then). The CTDs still ran strong but transmissions and diffs needs replacing again.

Ok, back from Arapeen OHV park, (middle of nowhere UT), MPG report. 3 fill-ups. 1, Fruita CO to Price UT, 160 miles, 10.5 mpg, 65 mph no wind, loaded heavy, guessing 27k total.
Pulls great! 2, Price to camp at 8700 ft in National Forest, last 5 miles (from 7000 ft to camp), were bad enough that I hauled up 1 at a time (was double towing). Good thing I did, met a truck with enclosed trailer going up that would have been a disaster if I had been 65ft long! 150 mile leg. Managed to get 8 mpg after filling up back in Price. MPG's really good at 10-15 mph :p. 3, Price to home with pretty bad quartering? side/head wind all the way, 8.5 mpg . Weird part was is that MPG meter in dash said 7.9, on 2nd and 8.4 on 3rd trip. Damn close. Usually off 1.5-2 MPG. Roughly 500 mi trip, did manage to use 3/8 tank of DEF! 1 1/2 - 2 gallons? I guess, Overall. Totally impressed, compared to old rig! :D

8.5 is about my best average towing and ~350 MPG on DEF. That included pulling Cumbres pass outbound ~380 miles and Wolf Creek pass back inbound ~350 miles.

I calculated 6.5 on one 200 Mile leg, but my speedo calibration was WAY off at the time and I was apparently hauling butt.

I don't know if I ever asked you what your gross is with the new set-up? I've read that they get better mileage in the mountains because of all the downhill.

:D

That 1-2 MPG uphill is still hard to make up going down. Still takes fuel to idle and run the elecs and crappy AC. I guess it really does matter what the starting and ending altitude is and how you got there.

Mostly a guestimate, but based on the actual scaled weight of the truck and boat, and prior RV scale weights, I should be right around 25K. Still have 1K payload and 13K towing available. My old truck was over (stock) on all the numbers.

My 2020 RAM 3500 CTD is my retirement truck, it will be paid for 2 years before. Then a newer 5th wheel to travel in. And I'm looking at 14k o 18k for the new trailer. So I'm set.

Ya, the A/C seems weak, but those cooled seats work pretty good :D
