2020 Ram 2500 - High Pressure Pump Failure - 2080 Miles

My wife and I made the decision to purchase a new 2020 Ram 2500 and add another $13,500 in accessories November 2020. We bought this truck in order to pull our rather large and heavy boat in and out of the water for service and storms. August 11th the truck broke down with no warning and extremely violently. Truck has 2080 miles. My 3 year son was in his car seat in the back and hit his head a couple times as the truck did not vibrate but violently bucked for 10 secs and shut off. 20 days later and the dealer ordered a high pressure fuel pump. FCA closed the STAR case as they disagree with the dealer and want more information. Dealer stats FCA doesn't want to admit it's a high pressure fuel pump. I'm not a engine guy and really have no idea what to say, be concerned about now or in the future, and what to do. Any thoughts?

My concerns:
1. The fuel pump does not fix the problem and my truck will be in the shop for months.
2. It gets fixed but there is damage that will result in many issues down the road.

I live in FL were lemon law is 3 repeat issues, but I think 30 days in the shop also allows for some process.

Thanks
Chris

I don’t know when you bought it and how much you paid for it but I’d recommend letting the dealer fix it and then trade it in for a 2021 or 2022. Right now you can probably get MSRP for it and assuming you paid less then that when the lots were full at the beginning of this whole Covid mess. You don’t lose much and you can get a new truck with updated pump that isn’t a time bomb.
2019s and 2020s come with a CP4 pump that’s been causing a lot of issues for Ford and GM. I don’t know why Ram decided it was a great idea to go ahead and use this pump when the other 2 had major issues. After 2 years and quite a few failures Ram decided to call it quits on the CP4 and went with a different pump.
Good luck, I’d be pissed if this happened to me. That’s why I didn’t get a new truck until they got rid of the CP4.

There’s another option but it voids the warranty. I doubt you want to go that route on a brand new truck. Let me know if you want more info.

Like everyone said, get it fixed under warranty and trade it in. If no warranty coverage do a cp3 conversion and enjoy. 2019-2020 had cp4 pumps that are rather notorious for expensive failures. Also look into your car seat selection , setup and mounting. The kids head shouldn’t bang around in that sort of event. Gotta keep the little ones safe!

In all fairness they did not run the same pump they got a CP4.2 unlike Ford and GM then after seeing a failure rate in 19 they got an updated design that was supposed to be better for the late 20s then after that sucked they went to a new CP3 variant…. Unlike ford who keeps the same pump over many years like gm did aswell

According to RamCares, there's supposed to be a service solution by the end of this month. I too have a 2020 with the same pump as the '19's and I am patiently waiting because I like the truck to much and theirs really not much out there to choose from.

Please report the incident to NHTSA.

Particularly if there was any injury, no matter how minor.

Make sure you call out the CP4 High Pressure Fuel Pump once the dealer confirms.

I paid 84K with a lift, rims, and tires. Could be weeks or months before it's fixed. It's already been a month. We'll see where truck prices are at that time. Not sure I would trade it in on a new RAM - not sure that would be smart:)

Thanks,
Chris

I wonder if Ford or GM has better customer service. RAM has been horrible and they don't care. No rental. They may reimburse for one but a rental here is ~500 a week right now and it's been a month. I don't want to chance 2K a month rental for a might reimburse. According to my STAR rep there are a lot of criteria that has to be met. They simply say I signed a contract to purchase the vehicle and they are honoring the contract by warranty work. I'm holding my end of the contract up by paying for it, but I think I should have some rights as when I paid or pay ever month still to this day I would have something in return. No word on how long this will take and Dealer and Chrysler are fighting. I would recommend that no one buys a RAM until this is all fixed.

Well the new rams are much better with the new pump, ford still runs the cp4 with no plans on changing it also tons on trans issues and GM cant keep transmissions in their 2019+ trucks

Kids head banged against the sides of the car seat. Set up is correct. It was a very rough buck. I was probably very close to hitting my head as well. I know it was aggressive enough for ~10 seconds that I had trouble staying in my seat.

Well, you stayed in the saddle for the 8 full seconds so you should get a score. Sorry to hear about your truck though. Hopefully the service solution Ram is hinting about will eliminate these failures. They are a huge black eye for Ram.

Best of luck getting it fixed.
