2020 HO Unimpressed Test Drive

Regarding the dead pedal, I bought a Banks iDash + PedalMonster combo and love it. It removes all of the dead pedal. The truck feels very responsive.

I agree the Aisin is lackluster when not towing, but I do think it does a great job when towing my 15k lb 5th wheel.

Eddie's Life on YouTube recently compared the Aisin to the 68RFE. He owns both. He said the Aisin is better at towing, and the 68RFE is better as a daily driver. No surprise.

With my 2020 3500 I get great MPG 19-21 empty no trailer. when I am pulling 14,000 Ib trailer I am getting anywhere from 13 to 14 MPG. With all the government mandated bull S--- add-ons I feel Cummins is doing a fantastic job. I do feel Cummins should have the last word on what Ram places on their engines like the CP4 pump.

What MPG do you get around town? I’m only getting about 12

Well you must have some super engine getting 14 towing that wt . My average is about 10.5 . I fail to see how you get that mileage towing and only 12 empty around town .

I had a 2016 3500 srw with aisn, have a 2021 5500, there is not the dead pedal as was in the 2016 and it shifts nice. I had a 2020 chev high country drw 3500 in between the two rams, the 10 sp transmission is not that great. It does shift nice when accelerating and yes it would jump off the line quicker, it also got 15% worse fuel economy towing then my 2016 ram and had less power at the top then the ram. Also blew up at 14000 km's, never had an issue over the 200,000 kms I put on my ram. The exhaust brake on the ram is far superior, try getting it to work on a Chevy in tow haul, flat and coasting to a stop sign, no go. I do have an 2021 f600 showing up this month to compare to my 5500 ram, the f600 gets a vanbody while the 5500 got a deck. When I get to experience the ford a little I will share my feelings. I only tow or haul with my trucks, no grocery runs or easy for them. To the original poster what I am thinking is the demo was trying to learn still and with all different drivers it might have been not sure what to expect.

I’m on my first “heavy” tow right now only getting 9.5 (26’ travel trailer) not sure how anyone gets better than that unless they drive 45mph?

I purchased a 2020 3500 Cummins HO in December 2019 and love it. The transmission shift initially was abrupt at times but after several hundred miles it smoothed out. At 500 miles I did a cross country trip (5500 miles) pulling a 13000 lb fifth wheel and the truck performed flawlessly. My trip went through every type of road you can think of with almost none of them being flat. I cruised at 70-75 routinely and averaged just over 10 MPG. I get approximately 20 miles to the gallon when not pulling. The exhaust brake worked great although a little aggressive in traffic where your speed went from 55 to 30 and back to 55. Some of that was probably me since this is the first diesel I've owned. I cam from a 2019 2500 6.4 HEMI, great truck but no comparison when towing.

Wow! How on earth are y’all getting such great fuel economy?? I’m averaging 9.5 towing a relatively light load 7000#) going 65-70mph.... only have 2500 miles on the truck (HO/Aisen)

Your mileage is VERY similar to what i got on my 2016 2500 cummins and likely what folks are getting today. Anyone telling you they are getting 14+ mpg towing 12,000 lbs up hills going 70mph is full of crap. They are getting mid 9's in that type of terrain, at that speed, just like me and you.

Your MPG will increase slightly as the CTD breaks in, it takes 15K miles to judge the MPG. But with that information, your not going to get what the early 5.9's got, that DPF is a potato in your exhaust. I wish I kept my 04.5 2500 with the manual trans. ;)

I'm getting about 19avg (mostly flat highway on my 50 mile round trip commute). The avg might be higher but I liberally use remote start and spend a good bit of time each day sitting in line to get through the gate on base.
The computer will say as high as 21-22 cruising these same highways around 65. Haven't hand calc'd but I know it's probably 3-4 lower.

Last weekend I did a 1200 mile trip towing about 8k. 60-85mph gave me between 10-12mpg, so I said screw it and just drove 85 the whole time. I have the factory 31gal tank and was getting just over 300 to a tank. Not great but my old 24v wasn't TOO much better.

I'll happily take the drop in MPG since every single other aspect of this truck is infinitely better and made for a fantastic towing experience overall.

I do plan to get a 50+ gal tank at some point, but 300 miles is roughly the limit of my bladder anyways so not a huge deal for now.

I was thoroughly impressed with every aspect of this truck ^
