I decided to do a fun little test of my trucks payload while at work recently, I also wanted to see how much or any squat my truck would have. My truck is a 2020 limited 3500 with air ride suspension with Cummins and AISIN trans. GVWR is 12,300 lbs., payload from door sticker reads 3806 lbs.

So to preface the test, I filled up my 31 gallon fuel in the morning and drove approx.. 1 mile to pick up stone (payload). The stone pallet I picked up weighed 2985 lbs.*, and two bags of Sand (40 lbs. each), I had the pallet directly over the rear axle. I weigh around 300 lbs. and had approx. 50 lbs. of gear in the truck. Where I work has industrial scales for weighing Heavy Duty trucks. After picking up payload the Scales read 12,080 lbs. On a flat surface I measured 41.25" to the rear fender wall, after unloading the payload I measured 41.5" in the same spot (0.25" difference).

Now one thing I would like to point out, I measured the truck weight for a second time while empty, But I only had 3/4 tank of fuel, I know I should have measured while with a full tank to see apple to apple, maybe next time. The scale read 9020 lbs., now deducting 300 lbs. (me), 50 lbs. of gear and 3/4 tank of fuel (31 Gal * 0.75 = 23.25 GALS * 6 (weight of fuel) = 139.5 lbs. of fuel) I came out to 8530 lbs. of Truck weight. And the payload in the back of the truck was approx. 3015 lbs.

*Weights on the slip were estimated. photo attached.

Now I'm sure some people will get on me for messing up a couple steps, but I was just doing this for fun and thought it would be neat and I wanted to share my information. I hope I didn't leave anything out, thanks for reading!

I was surprised that my new 2020 RAM 3500 dually seemed to squat as much as my 2013 RAM 2500 did under my 12K toyhauler. I did not measure, but it was only about 1-2 inches on both trucks. When I unhitch, on both the 2500 and 3500, I raise my hitch pin until the truck has space between the springs. then I know all the weight is off the pin and unhook. I have realize now how underrated my 2013 2500 was. And how underrated most 2500 are.

You may or may not know this. But you can get your trucks base weight by taking GVWR minus payload.

In your case 12300-3806=8494. Base weight is an empty truck with full fluids. Which you demonstrated for your test.

Your truck weighs 1492 pounds more than mine.

Thanks for showing us your test. This stuff always interests me.

Thanks Devil, I did know about the GVWR minus payload calc. I always like to test it to see how close the Manufacturer numbers are(pretty damn close in this case). Also, I used 6 lbs. / Gal for fuel, the number is closer to 7 but I suppose I will leave it.

Dude I just moved my girlfriend and in my Long box I had a washer, drier, stove stand up freezer and couch. It didn't squat an inch lmao.

I hauled two full pallets of some marble tile for a friend. each pallet was stamped with a weight of 2595lbs. I have a '19 3500 4x4 with 8'bed, payload sticker shows 4200lbs. I didn't ask for both pallets to be loaded into the truck, the 'box store loaders' just did it...it was very noticeable lol... and while i wouldn't go out of my way to repeat that experience, the truck did fine.
