2019 Truck cap/topper/camper shell thread

I've been looking on & off for a while now for a cap that works on the 8' beds. I initially didn't want the color matched fiberglass style in favor of the "overlanding" style. The choices are limited and the prices I have found start in the 5 figure range. Today I ran across this site and without a ton of bells and whistles it looks like it could be around $5,000. Has anyone ever heard of (or dealt with)

I especailly liked the price... well under $10,000 like the competition.

One quote I got for a Leer was almost $8,000 ordered locally.
Most of these “metal” overlanding types have a pop up tent or something built into them so they cost an exorbitant amount of money. Can’t remember the brand but it was like the GoFast Campers and it was damn near $27,000. I don’t need/want the camper style nor do I want one that over hangs the cab. Nuthouse Industries in Ohio makes some for the Gladiator and Colorado but they start in the mid $6,000 range. I can only imagine they’d be a lot more for a long bed with some options.

How is this even possible. In 2021 I paid $2,900.00 locally for my ARE MX with sliding side windows, sliding fold down front window, dog screens, black carpet headliner, and R&L T-Handles and Yakima rack. Have these things really tripled in price in 5 years???

Edit: I just priced the cap I have for a 2025 3500 and depending on options it is between $3,200.00 and 3,800.00. So not sure what Leer is selling. Maybe some armored plating or bullet proof glass or something?

Well you were smart to walk away from that quote I think! Pretty much exactly what I got and what I priced out last night, except that I got the Yakima rack also. The roof basket you added is a $900.00 option, and the CX HD canopy is a more expensive model that the MX I got but still that quote looks overpriced.

So I made a purchase today, however I won't be getting it any time soon. I really wanted to support a company like OVS or SmartCap, however they won't offer a long bed version for our trucks (I've asked them and others). The fiberglass styles look nice, but thery don't have the roof load capacity I think I might want in the future. I like the overlanding metal caps the most. I found a guy selling them for ~$4000. However I found the exact same cap on Alibaba for half as much. I decided to try Alibaba out and hope for the best. It'll take about 90 days until I receive it. The photo is the one from their listing, however I got them to make 4 plain doors (no windows, etc). The front and rear will have windows.

Got my new truck in December and finally got my topper painted and put on this weekend. Topper was off my 2014 Ram 1500 with 6'4" box and now on my 2026 Ram 2500. Was really missing the topper!
