2019 Ram CP3 Conversion Tick at idle

I recently bought a used 19 Ram 3500 and it has always had a random tick at idle coming from what sounds like the fuel system. I put a Fass 95gph and a CP3 conversion on it. When I took the CP4 off I checked the FCA for metal and there was nothing in it. I double checked the feed tubes for tightness. My tuner checked the rail pressures (actual vs commanded) and everything looked normal to him . It still has the tick and the engine vibrates almost like it has a miss. I posted a video of the symptom. Anyone have advice on what to do?

Sounds normal to me. Mine does with with the CP4 so I don’t think it’s a pump issue. My Duramax trucks did the same thing.

Okay thank you for the reply. There's something similar to a miss going on that is driving me nuts. It shakes the engine. You can see it on the dip stick for the transmission and definitely feel it in the steering wheel. I am thinking one of the injectors is bad.

For your sake I hope that’s not true. The Bosch injectors are not for sale to the general public so that will be a dealer purchase at a minimum or if you’re tuned just go with whoever you want.

Either way I would say if you are getting more than an audible tick and you’re feeling it in the steering wheel and see the dipstick moving it’s obvious it’s something. I’ll rewatch the video but I don’t think I noticed anything to begin with.

There have been instances of engine tick that has resulted in trucks being bought back and Lemons.

Saw it but unfortunately I did have any answer that isn’t serious. I can only speculate but I worry it’s engine related.

Post on Cummins forum. Type in “tapping noise lemon” it should come up.

Thanks again for your help. Do you think I should take it to a dealership, or a independent diesel mechanic that's a Bosch dealer? I hate dealerships haha.

So the dealer has an advantage is TSBs and national history on these newer trucks. You might be able to get it checked out but beyond that since you’re out of warranty (my assumption) you could benefit from any work getting done to either do it yourself or take it to a trusted diesel mechanic depending on complexity.

Bottom is would be to get it checked out and get a few opinions on this to give you some direction. I wouldn’t start throwing parts at it until you figure it out. If you’re tuned consider running an in-depth and thorough datalog and send it to your POC for them to take a look.

Lots of tools available but that’s were I would stert.

The dealer said I have a bad injector, but they can't determine which one is bad.

Are you kidding? They can automatically tell you and injector but not which one? For the love of god an edge CTS can monitor balance rates and tell you right away. They are just lazy as sh*t is what it sounds.

If in fact it is you’ll wanna take care of that but they are coming from Bosch. Keep us posted on pricing.

If you’re tuned you can consider a new set maybe unless they are very different than the previous gen.

You have options.

I ended up having them flow tested today from a certified Bosch shop in town and they said they all checked out great so I am going to put my engine back together after I try and find the crush washers for the new injectors. The noise is coming from somewhere else. I think I have the same problem as "Eddies Life" on YouTube. I don't think the technician at the dealership had a clue what the problem was.

Keep posting man. For real this is a good discovery thread. I’m a only slightly familiar with eddieslife issue.

So it’s a crush washer issue? That’s awesome you had them flow tested.

The Bosch dealer said I have to replace the crush washers on the injectors at a minimum to get the truck back together. Problem is Bosch isn't releasing any of the parts quite yet for the new injectors to the shops who service fuel systems. They were not sure where to get them from, so they are going to dig deeper tomorrow to see where they can find the injector crush washers. They had to use a 2018 injector test program to test the 2019 which was supposed to be close to identical, because the program for the shops to test injectors isn't released yet.

Very interesting and yes when you flow test that would make sense since those are one and done.

Can you post up the results on here?

Eddie's truck had some shrapnel in the rail.

Did it start after? Also did you get industrial or S&S? Just out of curiosity.

I am waiting on the washers still before I can do anything. I went with the Industrial Injection 10mm stroker pump kit.

I should have been more clear. Was the noise present before the conversion?

The noise has always been there, but the slight miss started after the CP3, lift pump, and tunes were done. I should have it back up and running on Sunday.

Thanks. Let me know. I’m hesitant to do the install until this gets vetted
I guess it’s better than the CP4 but I have my stuff on the way and I guess we will see.
