2019 Ram 2500 6.4 squeal at start up / Chirping Noise - merged threads

Hmmm…I didn’t realize this was a thing. 7 1/2 years with my 6.4, several 6.4’s in the fleet at my work, and all the other 6.4’s I’ve been around, I have never heard one squeak, squeal, or chirp on start up. Unless people are using the wrong onomatopoeia for the sound, I must be missing something.
out of my truck and my two buddies none of us have a “chirp” either. They all sound the same. I first came across this thread probably 4 years ago and I mentioned then that I don’t have it and I still don’t.

I do think the 6.4 has a bit of a unique sound, don’t know how to describe it. Maybe firing order or timing or something else different than other motors and it’s noticeable but it’s not a chirp or a squeal and it doesn’t sound cheap or junky (unless in MDS I think that sounds bad)

That being said, there are plenty of people on the chirp bandwagon. I am pretty confident that whatever it is, it’s normal and people shouldn’t worry about it

From reading on the forum I know how familiar you are with these trucks, honestly I'm amazed you've never heard it. When I went for my test ride in mine I heard it 10 seconds after it started up. It's not subtle, you can't miss it.
I mean, there’s a change in pitch or tone of the exhaust as it warms up, but definitely not a chirp or squeal sound, and certainly nothing out of the ordinary or the least bit annoying.
I’ll hear some lifter ticking once in a while on cold starts, but there’s no mistaking that for anything else.

Maybe I'll try to get a video one morning. It's kind of a whiny cricket if that makes any sense. Not an exhaust note, not lifter ticking. Very noticeable.

I just picked up my 2021 PW yesterday. 21k miles, no tick, but chirps like crazy. I thought it was the AC compressor when I was looking at it, because it quieted down when I turned it off, very slightly, but I think maybe that was a coincidence. No idea what it is. I'm not new to hemis but this is my first PW and I've never seen anything like it.

Had the chirping on my new 2022 POWER Wagon since new. Always thought it was a y pipe exhaust leak. Goes away when warm. It does almost sounds like a belt squeak but it always goes away.

I have a '24 with the 6.4 and It sounds exactly like a squeaking belt until warm. I did switch out to a Borla S-type cat back, so now you cant hear it as easily over the roar of the exhaust note.

I have Borla and it's only bad when cold. I just tell people it's a feature they didn't charge me for.

Bought a 2024 6.4 tradesman and its squeaks until it warms up than sounds normal. Going to read the 21 pages and hope for a solution.

I’ll save you the reading. There isn’t a solution if it’s the “Hemi chirp”. It’s a design flaw that the mothership refuses to acknowledge. It’s more annoying than anything…..until something does fail like an exhaust manifold cracks or something more expensive in the exhaust gives way like the catalytic converter(s) fail. Even then…good luck to us as the consumers.

The good news you ask…..I’ve heard a few new Chevys that sound similar lol. Good luck with the new truck. You will like it.

Not in my experience. Its just until the system warms up, expands and fits more tightly together. I figure the only real solution is a full aftermarket exhaust to include headers.

is it a solid chirp completely unrelated to engine speed or load? I ask because it sounds like a chirp noise that a multi layer metal gasket without spacers would make. But if it was it would follow engine speed.

Mine sounds exactly like a squeaky belt for just a few minutes. Then when warm its gone or too quiet to hear over then engine noise/exhaust note. I thought for sure it was a belt when I first got the truck. I opened the hood and tried to listen as much as possible and it seemed that it was coming from drivers side back of the engine and not any belts. I went under and listened and inspected and it sounds like its coming from the joint between the header and the down tubes. I cant say for sure though. But after many attempts to find it and reading that it is “normal”, I gave up. It is a disappointing because we have this expensive HD truck with a monster V8 powerhouse that sounds like a piece of S when you start it.

I think its coming from in here…IMG_4259.jpeg

I would look at the tie bar between the two pipe around the cats. Mine tie bar was cracked and when I welded it my truck is quieter and that was at least a year ago.

On a side note…

When i went under the truck to take the picture in my previous post I discovered the seal on my transfer case where it meets the rear drive shaft is dripping oil…Yay…

dealer fixed my seal in one day shortly after my previous post. As far as the chirp, when I was at the boat ramp today I heard a guy start his TRX and laughed because it also has the chirping noise. Sounded exactly like my truck and went away after it was warm.

Figured id chime in. Just purchased a BTO 2025 2500 (just posted it couple days ago), has almost 200 miles on it... mine also has the squealing/chirping noise at start up and goes away when warm after a couple minutes. Knew this coming into this though based on my research here... come to find out there is a megathread on it lol

Does the chirp noise change with RPM?
No. Just on start up, even if you turn it on and start driving 45 seconds later you can floor it and or coast once at speed and the chirp/squeal noise will remain the same. At least for mine it does. Kind of embarrassing showing off a new truck and i hear "man your belt is already bad" and i have to just say "thats the HEMI 6.4 for you."

I recorded this video getting out of work and before leaving to work yesterday and today. I am NOT advertising my youtube channel, i dont even use it. I only posted these videos today to post here for reference...
