2019 Ram 2500 6.4 squeal at start up / Chirping Noise - merged threads

They have done this **** 3 other times in the last 5 years. Nothing becomes of it so don’t waste your timezz
 
Talking with a friend of mine that builds offroad buggies, he suggested getting a few sheets of thin copper and making a multi layer gasket of sorts. His thought was the copper will shape to manifold and y pipe and allow movement without the noise. Thoughts?
 
My new 2024 does mot do this, I sold the 2021 last year with no ultimate manifestation of the problem taking place before I did so (36,000 mi)

the 2024 also has no rocker arm tick.

It does however idle @1400rpm on start up, I'm sure an effort to get oil pressure to the valve train, I guess that doesn't bother me too much.
 
Your 2021 should have cold started at a high idle like that. Mine is up around 1200-1400 on a cold start, slowly settles back to lower rpm. I generally don't shift out of park until it's below 1000.
 
I have a 2018, does the same thing. Very annoying and concerning. I wish Ram would take ownership of this stuff instead of "they all do it". Feel like talking to my kids when I ask, if all your friend jump off a cliff...does that make it ok for you to do it.

Ram...if they ALL do it...it is a design flaw.

Take a video please so that we can have proof that not every 2500 ram from 2024 makes that noise because the dealers and rams care all say that it’s just a normal noise for our trucks. Also my noise didn’t develop until about 200 miles or so

Maybe it did, I wouldn't bet my last dollar on it, but if it did in the +/-36,000 miles I started it, checked the gauges, waited on the high idle to subside before putting it in gear, I never noticed it above 1100rpm. I suppose it could have been 1400 and every time I looked at it it was just reading 1100rpm.

Or maybe it didn't idle that high like I remember it.

The 2024 definitely idles at 1400 on cold(any ambient temperature) starts. If it keeps it from digesting valve train components I guess I don't mind.

No, I'm sorry you'll just have to believe me that it does not chirp.

Maybe it IS normal and mine has something wrong/right about it that causes it to not chirp.

I bought my truck 3 weeks ago and it has chirped since I took it home. It goes away almost completely when it is warmed up but I really think it's an exhaust leak that gets better when the manifold heats up. I plan on going to the dealer and fighting about it but it is one of the reasons (Hemi tick being the other) that I insisted on an extended warranty. I have bumper to bumper for unlimited miles and 7 years. I will be well past 100K by then.

I'm not saying not to bring it in to be sure, but ... many, many people have thought it's an exhaust leak, but it's not, it's a characteristic of the exhaust on these 6.4's. I've yet to hear anyone have a fix for it beyond an exhaust change.

For me, it hasn't been a problem. I don't mind it all that much, it does subside quite a bit once warm. If there was an easy fix I'd do it, but it wouldn't prevent me from buying another 6.4.

I have read what you're saying but I just want to make sure. It sounds like a junk truck when cold. Gets better when it's warm but I can still hear it slightly. I was wondering if it is the reason exhaust manifold bolts seem to break. If it is completely normal, it's a shame they let them go out like this. I love the truck. The tech, the looks, power and handling are all great but it sounds like a piece of crap when I'm driving through the parking lot. Now I just tell people the pulley is on back order I think. LOL
 
I get what you're saying, and like I said I too wish it wasn't the case. I'm no exhaust expert but I swear some simple baffle or geometry change would eliminate it.
 
And one more thing that comes to mind ... last week I was driving my youngest daughter's car, a 2011 Subaru Forester. It has an exhaust squeak and a bit of a rattle at times, probably just a hanger. But it crossed my mind that it's kind of ok in a 13 year old little car worth probably 8k or less, but definitely not ok in a 70k new HD truck.:rolleyes:

Can you share more about where you got this information about 6.4 truck hemi exhaust manifold bolts breaking? I can’t find a single example of this happening. I keep seeing the rumor but have not seen actual evidence of it on the 6.4 only the 5.7. If you have a source please share I would love to read about it so I can learn and possibly go ahead and change my bolts for studs if possible.

I’m still leaning towards cold start timing advance, I wish I could run real time data when on a cold start until it goes away after about 5 minutes.

I am really thankful that you asked this. I looked around and I think it’s on the 5.7 hemi. I just bought this truck 3 weeks ago and spent weeks prior watching videos, reading and talking to people. The only reason I bought a 2500 is because I wanted a V-8. So much for my idea about an exhaust leak. I do think it’s ******** they let this noise in the design. They should have addressed it. 77k truck should not sound like Sanford and sons truck. I did just change the exhaust cat back to Borla. I can stomp on it when it squeaks.
 
Hmmm…I didn’t realize this was a thing. 7 1/2 years with my 6.4, several 6.4’s in the fleet at my work, and all the other 6.4’s I’ve been around, I have never heard one squeak, squeal, or chirp on start up. Unless people are using the wrong onomatopoeia for the sound, I must be missing something.

From reading on the forum I know how familiar you are with these trucks, honestly I'm amazed you've never heard it. When I went for my test ride in mine I heard it 10 seconds after it started up. It's not subtle, you can't miss it.
