2019 Ram 2500 6.4 squeal at start up / Chirping Noise - merged threads

2500 owners, I have the same problem. Not 1000 miles on this truck and its horrible on startup. Foolishly traded my 150 for this! I took it to a dealer in Colorado and they told me "I know its not what you want to hear, but its normal". No analysis, no info from where the noise comes from, nothing and no resolution. Obviously, its not normal. Something has not been designed correctly or a bad part etc... If exhaust, so be it, what is the fix? Thanks, Veno

My 2020 does it and yes it is very annoying. Took it to the dealership today and the tech took me to a new one on the lot and started it and it does the same thing. He says that's just how the 6.4 is. I asked if it would go away as it broke in and he said nope. It only has 3300 miles on it and it is embarrassing every time someone asks why that tough looking new truck squeaks. My first Ram and now I'm very disappointed. I have read this has been going on for years. You would think RAM would have come up with a fix by now or at least someone else. I'm going to contact RAM and see what they have to say.

My 2015 6.4 never did it through 4+ years, and 43K miles. My buddy's 2019 has never done it, to this point.

I’m not sure what you mean by chirping but Hemis are known for having a “tick” when you first start up. It will disappear after a few seconds and the oil starts flowing. I’ve owned 3 of the 5.7’s and 2 of the 6.4’s, all of them have/had it. It sounds like the lifters are tapping some say due to lack of immediate lubrication on the top end of the engine but I’m not sure. Each time I’ve taken mine in I’ve been told it’s normal. The highest mileage I’ve kept a vehicle was to 75k but there was never an issue with engine performance, no smoking at start up and smooth running. There’s lots of forums out there that speak to issues about it, changing oil brands, weights etc.

I called Ram and they opened a case for me. After they called dealership and they told them all 6.4 do this and there is nothing wrong with the vehicle, they closed the case on me. She did tell me if enough people do this it is more likely they will look further into it and hopefully have a recall to fix it.

How do you like that Borla by the way, I’m thinking of getting that one, how’s the drone?

Just out of curiosity, all of you owners that have this problem when was your vehicle built?
I just picked up a leftover '19 6.4 2500 and thankfully I haven't experienced that squeal you refer to. Mine was built 10/04/19.

I have the same noise coming from under my 2020 Ram 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi. It’s very annoying. I have been looking at Ram forums and the issue has been going on for a few years blows my mind. Brand new truck that only has 600 miles sounds like a POS. Harsh words but for a price tag over 50k I should not be dealing with this. I agree it’s not in the engine bay but more coming from under the truck. I have used a mechanic stethoscope and can not pin point the location of the squeak/squeal. Do I go through the hassle of taking it to the dealer multiple times to be told it’s normal? I have been a loyal customer for about 20 years purchasing multiple Chrysler/Dodge/Ram vehicles. I’m not giving up on Ram yet but not willing to waste my time and money on something that should never be considered normal. Ram let’s get this figured out so we can enjoy our trucks!!!

I’m so disappointed that I spent over $50k for the first brand new vehicle I have ever owned( I’m 46 years old), it has 800 miles on it, and it has an annoying squeal when you start it. So my question is what are we supposed to do? This many people all across the US having the same issue and spending the amount of money we spent. Someone at Daimler Chrysler needs to get to work on this. Brand new vehicles are not supposed to squeal, that’s not normal!! If anyone does by some chance get it fixed, or figured out, please let us know so we know which way we need to go.

Add me to the list. I am not happy. The work trucks I have here with Cummins don't do this, but I got the 6.4 Hemi for my personal truck and it sounds bad at idle or low rpm mostly. Windows down on a nice day or a drive through and my nice new truck is squeeling/squeeking/chirping or whatever you want to call it. I'm sending a message to this "Mark" fella, but someone needs to post a positive result for me to have much hope here. I hate the thought of taking my truck to the dealer and not being taken seriously or dealing with leaving it there for no reason.

Add me to the list as well. 55k for a truck that sounds worse than the 11 year old one I traded in... I asked them to look into it on my first oil change and they pretty much blew me off. Hopefully, Ram will come up with a cure.

Several of my friends have heard it and said "By the sounds of that, I'll stick with my Chevy".

Hi @Archangel74 - I am incredibly sorry that you are dealing with this. What is with the dealerships these days? Kind of off topic, but the last time I took my corolla in for the service, I watched them take the car from me and park it, it sat in that spot for an hour and a half, no one touched it and then they called me and said the work was completed. Told me they changed the oil and inspected. Not only that, they rocorded the mileage as 84,000 when it only had 40k on it and then said they couldn’t correct it in their system, I called the supervisor, everybody, no one would do ****. I’ll never go back. I called Ram about the alignment of the cab, they couldn’t even find the record of me purchasing the truck from them! Holy balls man! I drove in there two weeks later and cancelled the extended warranty I stupidly purchased, cause they will never lay hands on my truck barring catastrophic failure.

In the interest of open discussion and keeping everyone in the loop:

I got a message from Mark and RamCares and let him know I appreciate the effort of trying to help people on this forum, but I am busy right now and figure I know how a dealership appointment would go. I make an appointment, drop off the truck, have to deal with the inconvenience of not having all my truck/stuff for a couple days, they spend a total of 20 minutes actual work time listening to it, and then tell me "it just does that". I will wait until I am not as busy and/or they actually fix someones rig here.
