Hello all! First time posting and I'm looking for advice on my 2011 Ram 2500 with the 6.7. I am relatively new to the diesel world and this truck. A few days ago the temperature dropped here and I decided to try the exhaust brake after the engine idled up while sitting. It seemed like the exhaust brake was really aggressive and loaded the engine a lot. Smoke was also pouring out the exhaust, which it never does. I turned the exhaust brake back off after about 30 seconds. The smoke cleared and everything seemed normal. Is it normal to be that aggressive?

The truck has weight reduction and an Ez Lynk tune from Motor Ops. Maybe unrelated but the EGT sensor quite reading the next day also.

Was it black smoke?

The best way to warm your diesel up is to drive it gently until it's at operating temp.

At first, it was black but then kind of white. It was also dark, so it was hard to tell. Normally, I do jump in it and drive but I was hooking a trailer up before I left.

White could just be condensation burning off.

I personally wouldn't run the EB to warmup with fast idle, that can push a lot of soot past the rings and into the oil.

Try the EB at low idle when cold in the daylight and see what the smoke might look like if there is any.

OK, I was wondering if I should have let it go and see if the smoke cleared. However, I just won't use EB with high idle. I was expecting it to be loud but I was surprised that it pulled the engine down and blew smoke. It just seems too aggressive. I'll try again at low idle when the weather cools off, however I assume it will go into high idle automatically in cooler weather. Maybe, wait until after the engine warms up? I didn't realize EB even engages at low idle.
