Looking for suggestions on upgrading my shocks. Long bed, SRW, pulling a Paradigm 310RL. Pin weight around 3400 depending on the trip. I currently have 17,000+ miles and run air bags at 30 psi when hauling. Rides good loaded and good when unloaded (air bags to 5 psi). But I am thinking I can realize a better unloaded ride with upgraded shocks (Bilstein or. ?). Thanks.

What tire pressure are you running unloaded?

I’ve got 325/65r18 and I run 50 in front and 40 in back when unloaded. I ended up there doing the chalk test. I just max out the rears when towing. It helps, but being a longbed 3500…only so much you can do.

I am not understanding a tire inflation/load spreadsheet. You are running 55/35. Not sure of your tires but given mine, that means my load capacity would be 3085/2020 but my steer/drive weights are different 5240/3540. So my proper PSI unloaded would be 80++/75+. According to the charts. I'm confused.....

That’s per tire not per axle.

Ok. That makes sense now. I should be running 50 front 35 rear when unloaded. Should make for a smoother ride.
Back to my original post, based on my research, I am looking at Bilstien 5100's for the rear and 4600's on the front.

Why would you mix them?

I run 5100's F/R on my truck.

Some will say you can't run the 5100 on the front as they're slightly longer, but they work and many of us run them.

Personally never enjoyed 5100s on any vehicle that’s had em, you feel the small imperfections a ton. Ultimately choice is yours to make but in my opinion the best option is to have a shock tuned to your springs so the shock valving and spring rates work together. Thats why so many enjoy Thuren and Carli who tune their stuff together.

I would try the tire pressure first and see if you even still feel the need to upgrade shocks.

Run the same shock F/R

4600 will likely ride better empty and 5100 better loaded.

I liked the 5100’s on my 05, but my tire/wheel combo was heavier.

This in spades.

I love the 5100 for towing my 5th wheel, but it is definitely "sporty" running empty.

I think if the truck was used more empty than towing, I'd just stick with the 4600. That said, they are fugly yellow/blue. LOL.

The 4600’s are fugly, you’d think Bilstien would catch on to all the complaints about their appearance.

I’ll be towing most of next year so I am going with 5100’s front and back.
