I noticed while using the the 2019 link posted on this site the 2500 diesel rear axle is 3.73 compared to the 2018 which is 3.42. My thoughts are this is where the extra towing capacity and torque comes from.

First off, and I hate to be "that guy", but there is no 'G' in Cummins.

Gearing is part of it, but the engine, trans, frame, and numerous components were beefed up as part of the process of achieving higher capacities.

Fixed that @1HasBeen.

The torque has nothing to do with rear gear. The engine was upgraded and that is how the torque got there. and more horsepower.

Towing and payload are up about 200 lbs on all trims due to the weight loss.

Maximum tow capacity is up because of the frame improvements and a more robust gooseneck/5th wheel mount.

The engine upgrades make all that more easy.

The rear gear change is mostly because the 3.42 wasn't really saving that much fuel...andlet's be honest...fuel is important to save, but more noticeable power is better anyways.
