Ram 2500 tradesman with Cummins. 3000 miles service 4 wd light on will not go into 4 wd. Made appt with dealer and took it in. 75 miles away. Waited 5 hrs and advisor wanted me to leave it for 1-2 weeks. Couldn't get ride back, made appt. for 1 week later. Arrived and advisor states technician that fixes transmission is on vacation for the week. Asked if I could bring it back in a week. I also requested a loaner car which he States doesn't know if that can happen.
Has anyone had the light come on?

Seems to be the second time in as many days I heard someone say the dealer pushed them off for some extended period

Yeah. Same here, but with VW. Said 2 weeks before they can look at it. I can't drive because it will go into engine shut down as a fail safe. Emissions issues on my Touareg TDi. Ugh! Anyway, nearest dealer is same distance away, 60-70mi, so I had to leave it there. No loaner available. Gotta fight with VW service to reimburse my rental I need.

OP. If it's yellow, then it should be fine to drive. If it's flashing (or turns Red) more than likely not. Don't try shifting it into 4WD just in case, could cause other possible issues. Call Ram customer care to verify. I haven't had this happen to mine, but a Chevy I had it did. Turned yellow and was able to drive it. It ended up resetting on it's own somehow.

My 2021 is at the dealer right now for this. The light comes on every time I hit a bump then the truck won't go in 4x4. When I shut my truck off and turn it back on the light is out until I hit another bump. Dealer has had it for 3 days at this point they said they replaced a module and thought it was fixed then test drove and it did it again now they think its in the wiring. In my opinion most of these so called mechanics are parts changers at best.

Do you expect your mechanic to be an IT specialist as well?

My Dad's '12 3500 Cummins did this and it took me a long time to trace. His is the electronic 4x4 shifter. I was really close to ordering the shift motor for the transfer case when I tried one last ditch effort that I didn't believe would help at all. Everything else's tested fine up to this point.

Believe it or not, his coolant was slightly low. I had read somewhere that this could cause the "service 4x4" message and thought that at least I would top it off since it was slightly below the low mark. The truck hasn't seen that message for a couple years now, and I never would have thought that topping the coolant off would make the message clear. Anyways, might be something cheap for you to try/check. It was a specialty pink/red mopar coolant if I remember correctly.

We also had our '17 3500 Cummins flash the "4wd in progress" message any time we hit a bump. While the truck was under warranty the dealer was unless in getting it fixed. I fixed it myself by replacing the 4wd shift sensor switch that sits on top of the T-case near the 4x4 shift lever.

Hope this helps somebody.

The Service 4WD light came on in my '21 Power Wagon after having it for a week. Took it back to the dealer and they ended up replacing the entire sway bar disconnect mechanism per the factory's orders. The dealer had to keep the truck for a few days but they gave me a Rubicon Gladiator as a loaner. Was fun to drive it but felt so glad to get back into the Power Wagon.

Having this same issue did you ever figure out what it was?
