S/O Has Plenty Of Power

Just finished a 3-day trip to the New England area pulling a 5th wheel that weighed roughly 13,500lbs with about 3100lbs of pin weight. I must say, that Cummins diesel is phenomenal. I know many of you opted for the H/O but hats off to the S/O too. I started encountering a lot of decent grades going through VA/PA and finally into NY and VT. It pulled pretty well in my opinion. The crappy roads were a bear with the 5th wheel bucking (my wife and I call it bull riding) but overall towing went pretty well. :D
 
I can second this. I came from a 2018 Ram 2500 that was running a tow tune and went back and forth on the SO or HO, knowing I would not be tuning this one. I ended up getting the SO and have been impressed so far with it. I tow a 14000K fifth wheel and feel the SO is plenty. It is also much more quiet and smoother than my 4th gen.

Either motor has plenty of power. Power is not the issue towing heavy with these trucks.. the (while towing) issue is usually lackluster payload on high-trim level SRW 3500's or soft rear suspension on the 3/4 tons.

Agreed. I saved decent PL by getting the SO and 4X2.

Considering that some years ago HO was making as much as a SO today, it definitely is plenty. But it's never enough.
 
I've seen (3) dyno videos where the SO put down over 800 tq to the wheels stock. The drivetrain loss in a 4x4 with an automatic is not limited to 50 tq I can promise you that. The SO is putting out over 900 at the crank and it's not hard to believe since a simplified way to look at the HO is the same engine with a few more PSI of boost in it, which would make the SO respond in kind (yes I know there's technically a few different other parts).

Also, I've ran 18 wheel dump trucks and driven F750 crew trucks pulling full size backhoes that had engines with less than 800 lb/ft.

The SO ISB Cummins is a monster.

I was impressed with its pulling power. I'm very happy with it.

More money for the same motor with the compression ratio and tune changed.. Its dollars and cents profit for the manufacture.

Don't be confused. Many, including myself got the HO for the Aisin transmission it's paired with.
 
I would have saved myself for an HO if they still had a standard option lol
I would have got the SO if the standard was still an option. Unfortunately standard was too outdated and wouldn't keep up with power output anymore that's one of the reasons it was dropped

Thats not true at all the standard can hold more power than the auto its more the fact less people are buying standard the 4th gen standard sales were way down
 
Yes beside the fact that there weren't enough sales, manual unfortunately was not capable enough without extra mods.
If you look at the history of Cummings + manual, manual used to come paired with more powerful Cummins version than the auto, this reversed over the years. Besides what internet sources said, there's no other explanation why manual was coming with reduced output engines in recent years.
 
The new auto's are stronger than the manuals which is a reason manuf arent offering the stick shift any longer behind modern diesels.
 
That's irrelevant to the topic. Keep tranni subjects in tranni threads. I bought the SO on my personal vehicle because I hate the aisin. I own 10 aisin transmission Ram trucks. I just like the shifting on the standard tranni. But this thread is about the power level being plenty with the so. I can pull the same 13k excavator and 8k loader on a 4k trailer with my so and my HO. The so has plenty of power. You can hardly tell the difference. My so does better than my Ford 550 pulling that combo. Yea it's overweight but it works.

Your Ford 550 must be old. The latest 6.7's will destroy any new cummins, HO or SO, in a straight line or up a mountain.

Mentioning trannies was relevant to your previous, uninformed post. What is irrelevant is your tranny preference. You may hook up and do a side by side comparison of your SO and HO trucks all you want but the fact is, you're way over the manufacturer's weight limits for SO with that 25k combo. SO max towing max out somewhere in 21-22K lbs range and HO is 35K lbs.
Yes SO is plenty but the tranny it's paired with is a weak link.
