Well I learned a very valuable lesson last week DON'T attempt to fill your DEF tank full and most certainly don't do it before you plan to leave on a trip!!!! I thought I would be over prepared and make sure my DEF tank was filled to the top prior to a long trip that was a big mistake that led to a trip to the dealer to settle the very very fussy DEF system down. Apparently the new ultrasonic tank level sensor needs air space at the top of the tank to read the tank level properly and without it the truck will get very upset to the point of MIL and 5mph max speed warning. Took to dealer and they drained tank a bit and drove for 15 minutes at a constant speed on a smooth road after clearing MIL light to settle the system down. I was informed by them there is a STAR case for this issue and they actually provided me the details of what to do if this ever happened again. First time owning a RAM with DEF system so I was a bit shocked to hear don't ever fill the tank, my Ford was not this fussy when it came to filling the DEF tank. Lesson learned will not ever put more than a 2.5 gallon jug in when gauge reads below a half still love my RAM and won't look at other brands until cabin tech comes in line with what RAM offers. I will say though my Lariat seats in my '17 F250 were miles ahead in comfort to what my RAM Laramie has!

I've taken the same approach to never fill to more than 3/4 - 7/8 DEF tank. My M.O. is 2.5 gals at around the 1/4 mark. In winter when the truck is seldom used, I'll keep it even lower to prevent a giant iceberg.

I also use one of the screw on Ford (?) DEF filler tubes and never the flimsy one that comes with the jugs.

I put in 3 gal at the truck stop when it approaches empty.

Yup, Ford. I got mine via Amazon, of course.

Good research! Thanks for the heads-up.
Could you send that as a .pdf file?

That's the one that I got! It works nicely!
I just ordered one of these. I hope it works with the Walmart Super Tech DEF jugs. I had great luck with the first couple of jugs but the last two have leaked.

Thought I was smart and topped off my 2023 3500 Longhorn with DEF. A few miles down the road I got the "149 miles left to drive" message. Continued on my 200 mile trip and eventually the message went away. No repeat even after stopping along the way. A couple of trips around town over the next 2 weeks: no issues.

Then I drove down a mountain road with sharp curves and when I got to the freeway I got another DEF system alarm. This time I pressed the OK button to clear it and since then it has not appeared again.

So, I do plan on getting it checked out but have some general questions. What messages are given when in alarm other than the first mileage warning? I did see the mileage being reduced when displayed but the second time the message cleared when I pressed the OK button.

If the reoccurs will the countdown start at 149? I missed it the second time.

If the issue is clear the count down should reset. The DEF system is sensitive to be overfilled so the best way is to fill it with one jug when the gauge hits 1/4 it will fill the tank to 3/4
